SHOULD I TAKE PAXIL WITH MY PROZAC?

Posted by Joy on November 26, 2001, at 19:42:57

I am on 40 mgs of Prozac which keeps me from getting depressed. It helps with anxiety a little, but I still get anxious sometimes and a little irritable. I take Xanax as needed [not often] but take .5 mg with 50 mg Trazodone for sleeping. Should I just take the 40 mgs Prozac with Xanax as needed, or should I take 10 mgs of Paxil with 30 or 40 mgs of Prozac for the anxiety factor. I was on Paxil quite a while ago for a few months and it worked well, but after a couple of months I was hungry [on 20 mgs] but I would go only to 10 mgs this time with Prozac as a balance. I'm not sure what to do; any advice out there people? Thanks.

If paxil was working before why don't you go back on it, afterall you were only taking the minimum therapeutic dosage at 20mg. The recommended effacious dose ranges from 20mg to 60mg. Why not try going back on it at a higher dosage of course wait 14 to 21 days until the prozac has completely left your system. I was on Paxil and it helped with my anxiety and depression... unfortunately i went off too soon and relasped. Now on effexor but that's another story. You do know paxil is prescribed for social anxiety, GAD, depression and OCD. So why not kill two birds with one stone and take paxil by itself. Xanax is only a temporary fix and can be quite problematic if you have an addictive personality (not that you do, as you're not taking it often). Sleeping will be a problem at first but nothing too severe. If trazodone isn't working try STARNOC it's relatively new although i'm not sure what the active ingredient is. I took it to ameliorate my erradic sleeping schedule and it worked well although i'm not to sure if it could be used for long term use. I hope you find something that works for you, but taking two ads concurrently seems a little excessive considering you should in theory be able to find ONE that your body responds well to... there's lots out there... all the best and good luck!!!

Absolutely NOT! pick one or the other not both

Combining 2 SSRIs is an excellent way to get Serotonin Syndrome (which can be fatal)!!!
You should probably stay with the current dosage of Prozac & Trazodone for sleeping but take a longer acting benzodiazepine like Klonopin (clonazepam) 2x per day b/c if you take it once in the morning & one at night, the half life of Klonopin is long enough that after 3 days your body has a constant rate of klonopin in the blood= no more ups & downs w/ anxiety.
