Adderal vs. Concerta

Posted by Peter on November 15, 2001, at 0:30:49

Hi all:
I've been on adderall for almost 2 weeks now, and as my doctor and I are finding the right dosing for me, I'm noticing alot of beneficial effects. He has me taking it 3 times a day - 5mg in morning, 4hours later another 5mg, and 5mg 4 hours after that. All in all, it seems like the peaks and valleys I felt at the beginning of treatment are smoothing over. But, I'm a little annoyed that I have to take it 3 times a day (I already take doses of klonopin throughout the day and depakote at night, so I'd like the most convenient dosing approach possible). That's when I learned about the fairly new Adderall XR - supposedly lasts 12 hours and is taken once a day. My p-doc said we might switch over to that down the line, though he hasn't yet prescribed it to anyone. My brother was just diagnosed with ADD and his pdoc placed him on Concerta, which I learned is another once daily medication. Now, my doctor originally said he prescribed me adderall over ritalin because I have a comorbid bipolar/ADD with anxiety, and he considers adderall to be better on the mood (smoother up and down slopes, etc.) than ritalin (which is shorter-acting and has more rebound crash, etc.). But we never addressed a long-acting ritalin like Concerta. Even though Concerta is Methylphenidate-based, is it alot smoother in action than normal ritalin because of its sustained release mechanism? If so, it would be just as good a likely candidate for me for a once daily smooth-acting ADD med as Adderall XR. Also, does anyone have any experience with Adderall XR? Does it really last 12 hours? What can anyone say about the comparisons between Concerta and Adderall XR? Or, for that matter, Concerta and normal Adderall? I'm very interested in some info to see what, if any, is the best long-acting choice drug.

I am wondering about Adderall XR too. I don't have experience with Concerta. However, one thing that is good about stimulants is that you can try them and find out fairly quickly if they work for you and how you tolerate them, and then just make a decision as to whether to continue or discontinue, unlike many ADs, which you have to wait a while to assess.
