More on social phobia-Valium focus

Posted by PaulB on September 18, 2001, at 17:29:39

Hi there,
Anyone whose been around PB for a while will know I am having been having trouble getting over my social phobia but depression(thank, thank, thank GODX1000) remains stabilised on an amino acids of all things(L-Tyrosine). Just kidding I know theres no reason why an amino acid shouldnt be an antidepressant.

Im not sure anyone noticed Id gone for a while. Dr-Bob your site just seems to get more and more popular with more and more new names appearing.

Down to the Psycho-Babble then:
I have just recently come off Clonazepam without too much trouble. The good news is that it was damn effective, didnt worsen my depression but seem to build up tolerance to it after a few months. I know theres a lot of evidence pointing to the P450 isoenzyme system breaking down benzo's like Xanax and Klonopin real easy in the liver and the brain causing them to be less effective. So I have suggested a switch to Valium. I really do feel it was liver tolerance and not tolerance to the effects of the drug itself because I had a valium tablet and it worked. So my pdoc suggested 20mg a day may not induce liver tolerance. Anyone whose on Valium I would appreciate what dose you have found to be an effective consistent one.
PaulB
Final note for this post for anyone whose yet to try meds for SP. For me Clonazepam is one heck of a lot more effective than the SSRI's I tried.

Hi Paul,

To be honest I had a better overall response to diazepam than clonazepam for mutliple anxiety symptoms, but it tended to make my depression worse when I was depressed (clonazepam didn't). So L-tyrosine is helping with your depression? Can you share with us what dose or preparation you are taking? I am not being skeptical, just curious. I have tried 5-HTP without much success, but I didn't stick with it very long. I can't seem to ditch SSRI's, I would love to find a substitute.

Mitch.
Thanks for your response. I found it very interesting. It is my understanding that Clonazepam is most notorious for worsening of depression. Yes, L-tyrosine is certainly helping with my depression. For the last year it has saved my life but SP is really taking its toll.
A few secrets to my success with L-Tyrosine are that I understand the lack of catecholamines are responsible for inducing my depression, I know the thoughts that occur when I get depressed so i know when to take l-Tyrosine. Also SAM-E is essential. B Vitamins and other nutrients alone are not enough.
Im pressed for time, Sorry

Clonazepam (klonopin) was only effective for me if I took it regularly. On the other hand, I have used valium as a prn; it acts quickly and dependably. If I'm very depressed I try to stay away from valium, but my depression is usually not a stimulating one. If I am very anxious, I have tried to keep my level of valium down to 20mg a day. I start with 5mg, and that is usually enough. If not, I'll add 2.5 at a time. Valium makes me more tired than klonopin, but other than that I have had no side effects.
