bruising on neurontin

Posted by sar on September 16, 2001, at 11:25:02

lately my legs have been all bruised up! i've had 2 odd-looking large dark splotches, really purple, and my entire right shin is a light shade of blue! i'm not a hypochodnriac but i was beginning to think i've got cancer! today i read the little foldy piece of paper that came with my neurontin and found this:

Hematologic and Lymphatic System: *Frequent*: purpura most often described as bruising resulting from physical trauma...

Dermatological: *Infrequent*: skin discolor

has anyone else experienced this or anything similar?

thanks,
sar

Sar,

Could it be another med causing it? I never had any bruising on Neurontin, but I did with Depakote, though (minor-after dinging my arms or legs). I suppose it is possible, what is your N dosage, did it result right after you increased it?

Sar,
Just about every med I tried to combat my CFS and depression caused me to bruise.... VERY easily. I *think* it's somewhat common... but it can't hurt to look into it. Just don't go scaring yourself!!!!!!!!! See ya on the other board,
Kristi

I have crazy bruising on my legs, too, but not from my meds (i don't take neurontin). In my case the bruising is related to Lupus. Usually, it means that someone is short on platelets (blood cells involved in clotting). There are a number of other medical conditions that can cause bruising, too, ranging from the mild to the more serious, so it's a good idea to get to a doctor just to be sure.

Easy bruising indicates a (perhaps temporary) deficiency of Vitamin C, particularly the bioflavanoids.

Eat the insides of some oranges. The white stuff.

Sar:

I have on Topamax, but not on Neurontin.

How's the Neurontin fairing?

i'm going to have to see a doctor about this, it's really freaking me out...

the neurontiin seems to be helping a bit...i tried to drink the other night, and after 2 24 oz'rs i was *so* done, i passed out immediately. normally (undrugged) i can drink like King FratDad. i seem to have evolved into the pollyanna of alcoholics. :)

last night i drank 1 24 oz'r, took an extra klonopin, brushed my teeth, and snuggled into bed to listen to music and flip through books!

large change, as 2 nights ago, my mother woke me up wine-drunk passed-out at the floor at dawn.

tomorrow i ramp my dose up to 600 mg/day, then next week 900 mg/day...which i'm looking forward to.

the weirdest side-effect of being all drugged up is that my co-workers wonder why i walk around smiling and laughing to myself all day. i must look like a loon, but most of 'em still talk to me...

thanks krazy kat,
sar

I have not experienced this bruising effect on Neurontin.

Neurontin increases the affect of alcohol a LOT!
I have to be careful now. I would tend more to drink some at home than when I go out especially if I am driving.

I'm also getting bad bruising from the Neurontin. I noticed this as I started to increase the medication, and take it on a dialy schedule. I've also experienced a bit of hair loss and skin rash from the medication. I take 300 mg a couple times a day and my prescription says Gabapentin instead of Neurontin, if that is important.
I have read that bruising, as well as bleeding under the nails (which has not happened, but used to happen when I was drinking and taking other meds) is a sign of distress in the liver. Too many toxins. So I'm wondering if my dose is too high for my body. I am skinny, and small, and 300mg is a high dose.
The 300mg was just the initial dose. I need to consult my doctor and see if a lower dose would work. The medication helps me with a feeling of agitation that goes on with me all the time. I don't want to discontinue this med because it makes me much more comfortable in situations where I have to be still.
Good luck to you.

Oh and also, I asked my pharmacist about it and she said that in "less than 1%" people reported severe bruising in trials for the drug. So it may very well be the medication. Just FYI.
