Questions for Cruz (and others) on Ketoconazole

Posted by Cecilia on September 10, 2001, at 3:41:46

Do you have any links on the use of ketoconazole for depression? I understand that even though it`s an antifungal drug it`s used experimentally in depression to lower cortisol levels but I believe it`s a pretty toxic drug. Also since depression and stress increase cortisol levels how do you know which came first? You mentioned having abnormal circadian rhythms and I definitely have that. As long as I can remember I`ve woken up totally exhausted and in almost physical pain from overwhelming depression, no matter how much sleep I`ve gotten, then when I try to go to sleep at night I have severe insomnia (Fortunately I work an evening job as it takes every ounce of will I have to drag myself out of bed at noon.) Is this the type of circadian rhythm problem you have and did the Ketoconazole help it? Also I read somewhere that Tianeptine lowers Cortisol levels, have you tried this?

I tried tianeptine, it did'nt help

So far Nizoral(ketoconazole) is working great!
I'm experimenting now to see how small a dose I can get by on. Anybody on anything would be prudent to not take any more med than is needed. That goes for anything we ingest, food,water,etc..
We crave to understand how things work. How any of these meds work is not entirely known. Is the good response to Nizoral because it lowers cortisol or because it directly affects my circadian rythmn itself or is it doing something else. At this point, of our understanding of mood disorders there is no answer. Good luck!

I don`t know where you`re posting from, but if it`s the U.S. or Canada, your circadian rhythms must be similar to mine! What kind of side effects have you had with Ketoconazole? Cecilia

I'm in the US. I have'nt noticed any side effects. The brand I'm using is Nizoral made by Janssen. I took one 200 mg tablet about 6 days ago. My improvement was immediate. Its has stayed that way so far. I am keeping my sleeping hours consistent. So far so good. I had been takeing amisulpride and DHEA for a months or so, but may discontinue these. They were'nt helping very much until I took the Nizoral.

Hi Cruz.

I was wondering if you could give a description of your illness. I'd like to see how similar it is to mine. In the past, I have tested positive for cortisol secretion dysregulation.

I'm a weird kind of bipolar that never comes out of depression except for a few episodes of drug-induced mania (dysphoric or mixed-state). I feel constantly fatigued and slowed-down. I have great difficulties reading more than just a few sentences and I am pretty much vegetative.

Thanks.

SNAP. :-(

Cruz, have you taken just the one dose? If so has yr 'remission' been consistent ever since? How near complete remission would you say you are?

Thanks,
J.

I have taken just a 200 mg tablet about 6 days ago. My remission has been consistant since. I think I'm feeling at my best even with the crud that's been happening. Read my post "I feel good......like I new that I would" about what happened to me saturday. My illness has been consistant over these many years. Its atypical in that I sleep alot more when I'm down, which is most of the time. I don't have energy and I think extremely slow. I would suffer from severe social phobia and such. But not anymore. Life is good, I hope it continues. I vowed that when and if I ever found successful treatment I would'nt abandon others that were still suffering. That's why I am still checking this board and posting my experience and progress. Good luck!

Cruz: Ketoconazole source?

Hi Cruz,

I'm glad you're doing well. How did you get the Ketacanozol? Is it being prescribed by a pdoc for depression?

Thanks

Peter

Hi. I'm posting this as a follow up to a discussion on the use of Tianeptine or Ketoconazole for correcting corticosteroid elevation associated with depression. Cruz, I saw one of your old posts on your success with Ketoconazole. Can you tell me how it helped you? I heard that Ketoconazole is quite toxic, so I have been very worried about that. In fact, several years ago, a dermatologist chose NOT to prescribe it for me for a toe nail fungus because of its systemic toxicity. She gave me a topical form of it and told me to use it only every other day.

I am currently trying Tianeptine for my depression and severely elevated corticosteroid levels. I've been on it only a few days, so I can't make up my mind yet, but I'm interested to hear about your experiences with Tianeptine and Ketoconazole. Thank you.
