is there hope of life without medication?

Posted by noah4321 on August 18, 2001, at 13:54:27

Is there anyone out there who was diagnosed with schizophrenia and has managed to get off of their medications and live life without them?

Or are there any people out there who used to take anti-psychotics and have managed to live life without them?

If you are medication free, how did you do it? Does anyone know how to get off of anti-psychotics?

I think that if your doctors think you should be on an antipsychotic, then that's probably the best thing to do. If there is a particular problem or something you don't like with your current AP, you could try substituting others for comparison to see which is best for you.

I'm sure there are people who give up their meds and try to get along without them. I guess it's a balance thing. Some people are willing to endure torture more than they are willing to endure medication. But again, I think it all comes down to being on the RIGHT medication. The right one won't be so disagreeable that you want to throw it out.

I agree with John, That there is a scale from no help to help to too much side effect and it is looking for a balance that is the hard work we do. Tho my dx does not include schizophrenia, I came across this organization. Though I am not sure about this myself, but you might find it interesting:

hi noah,

http://www.iahf.com/orthomolecular/20000229.html

this is the documentary i saw about the success of the niacine therapy with schizophrenic patients. watch it for inspiration and names of doctors/centers who give this approach a try. I understood from the documentary that people have to stay on individually tailored megadoses of vitB and some other supplements for life because of very skewed individual biochemistry profiles, but no antipsychotics or other 'more traditional' interventions ever after that.

best wishes,

mila
