I was wondering what the effects are of drinking while on Effexor. Although I only drink occasionally, I'm wondering if I should do it at all. Any experiences, facts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Kel,
I drank occasionally when I was on Effexor. I'm Italian and Jewish so a little wine with a meal is quite the norm. I did notice that I would get drunk faster. Therefore I would limit myself to a 2 drink max.
I did get way drunk once on Effexor. I had 3 whole beers! I was soooooo wasted. Be careful of this if you do not like this effect. Otherwise I found that if I kept it under 2 drinks I was OK. Your experience may be different. I'm quite a solid guy.... Weight plays a factor.
Take Care,
Simcha

Kel,
I'd like to add that I waited a few weeks before trying so much as a glass of wine. I decided that my body was having enough of a struggle to adjust to the medication without complicating the process by ingesting alcohol. I just thought that was common sense.
I have heard on this board that if you are a regular drinker that suddenly stopping alcohol consumption while starting Wellbutrin might make you more suseptible to seizures. I'm not sure that this is so for Effexor. So I guess one could argue that moderate use of alcohol may not be as bad as the warnings may suggest.
..just a thought,
Simcha ;-)

>I have also found that you can feel your drinks much faster when on effexor. I have gotten drunk on 1 1/2 glasses of wine. Now I limit myself to half a glass in the evening. It helps me sleep. The doctor told me not to drink any alcohol because it counter acts with the effexor. The effexor becomes less effective.

To all concerned, first the effectiveness of the drug is not at all changed by the consumption of alcohol... In any case, the general consensus is that it does seem to make one more likely to get drunk on a smaller qty of alcohol...
I had problems w/ it when i started because i couldnt curb my drinking, and i went through a little 'rage' phase... I dont think that having a glass of wine or a few beers is going to hurt anyone, but of course, if you don't feel comfortable with the drug, give yourself a few weeks to adjust to it, then start drinking...
But, Id say that effexor + 1/2 beers or glass of wine is perfectly fine...

For me it was like the alcohol took longer to kick in but when it did WHOO-boy. I was drunk as hell, really fast, and on not-that-much alcohol.
Use caution.
I think that 2-drink limit sounds like a good plan.sl

>Hmm...you know, come to think of it, something like that happens to me too. I'll drink my normal amount, go to bed an hour after my last drink, wake up a few hours later to go to the water closet (yeah, I know, I'm a minor Anglophile) and stumble down the hall feeling more sloshed than when I fell asleep. Odd.
