Topamax: Sore Throat?

Posted by Elzabeth on August 1, 2001, at 12:48:00

First of all, I'm a nit wit, I'll admit. I can't find my earllier thread. Excuse me if this is confusing that I've started a new one. And this is Elzabeth, not Elizabeth. Today is Day 4 with the 25 mg. twice daily. I've noticed changes -- yuck -- in taste. Most notably, the sour taste in my mouth. Or maybe it's metallic. No problems that I've noted with cognitive impairment (other than not being able to navigate my way 'round the net, but that's nothing new). But have any of you had problems with sore throats? Owie! Or is this something else? How are you all doing, btw, in your general recovery issues from being -- um -- less than whole. What are you reading? How are you doing? I have PTSD, probably some attachment issues, have been told I have borderline personality disorder by at least one MD, and now -- am looking at issues of mild bipolar (with primarily a unipolar presentation at the depressive end). I am taking Serzone for depression, and feel ... barely functional ... much of the time.

What's working for you?

XXX, E.

I had the sore throat. It lasted for a few days. Totally weird side effect. I guess it is connected to the strange taste changes.

Hmmm... my son takes topamax. He is complaining of a sore throat today. But most notably, he says every day, "What's that smell?" when I can't notice any smell. He is only 5 1/2.

16# and Grapebubblegum, turns out I had strep throat! So glad I checked that out, by the time I finished posting my note, I was miserable! Thanks for writing. Bubblegum, I'm sure your son must be asking about the funny taste. Having blossomed from a svelt 116 to nearly 200 pounds over the last 15 years (yikes!), I'm waiting for potential (possible) weightloss benefits. In this first week, all I've noticed so far is an unpleasant taste to foods I used to enjoy. Best wishes, everyone. XXX, E.

Best of luck to you. I hope it works out for you. I have lost 5 lbs in a month. Doesn't sound like much but I had not been able to get the needle to budge in a year. Have had some side effects: blechy tastes and some word finding difficulties (need to keep my thesauraus with me at all times) otherwise it has been all right.

16# -- how long have you been on Topamax? What level of dosage are you taking at this point, and are you taking this in combination with other drugs? If you'll forgive my prying, would you explain what it was prescribed for?

I have been seeing various MDs off and on for -- God -- for probably 13 years. I gave up for awhile. So many just didn't seem able to help. I've had more diagnoses than I knew what to do with. Some heartbreaking. Very few helpful. My new MD thinks I might be bipolar ... that the Topamax will help with this (and I'm hoping he's right). Would like to dialogue with other struggling "friends" dealing with the black beast of depression .... XXX, E.
