Buspirone/Wellbutrin

Posted by CLAIREZ on July 26, 2001, at 16:25:49

For 3 months I've been taking 150 mg (1/day) WB sr. for
mild depression. I'd previously tried Prozac and Serzone but
but was inable to drive/weepy/anxious. I'd used Zyban
to stop smoking before so went back to WB.
Because of periodic high irritabilty/anger and mood
shifts, my GP put me on Buspirone as well a week ago.
Wonderful for 4 days then I got massive headpains and excessive
sweating episodes. Today, I've stopped both with the
idea of flushing out the system and starting over.
Was this reaction (with such low doses this seems odd)
because of the combination? Any recommendation to
try just one and which one? I don't think I'm depressed
- I've been that before and was treated w/Elavil. I seem
more angry and hyper-irritable when relatively normal
things happen...thanks for any help/advice.

Buspar is a pretty crappy med in my view. It may work for some, but I see it as a cop-out to using benzos (that in my opinion have fewer side effects, but the possibility of tolerance/addiction). If you took Zyban before and had no worries, then it is not the 150 SR of Wellbutrin that is causing you trouble. As you know, Zyban and Wellbutrin are exactly the same thing (just different writing). SOOOOOO....looks to me as the Buspar is the culprit. Wellbutrin CAN cause you to be irritable and crabby for awhile, but it is a good mood lifter. I have taken it for about 2.5 years for depression. Out of curiosity, if you don't think you are depressed, why take antidepressants? Look at the depression scale (i.e. are you sad for no reason? feel hopeless, worthless, trapped, can't sleep or sleep too much, sociophobic, suicidal ideation and the like).

I'm not sure how this works for typing a followup. So if it is senseless then please forgive! I'd have to say no to all of the above - originally when I went back on WB I felt aggravation at my life in general..always looked on the dark side of things and preoccupied with negative thoughts. I'm not sure quite what I'd be described as - but probably so mood-swingy from gregarious to down. Not that anything I am seems to interfere with my functioning (lo and behold a migraine is keeping me home today) - though increasingly my irritability, crabbiness and general mood swings are major factors in my alienating friends and family. Somebody recently said "just pick one mood and stick with it".

Well, not to be judgmental, but whoever told you to "pick a mood" was being insensitive toward you. Sounds like you have "issues". Now, I'm not Dr. Bob here, but if you are not satisfied with your medical treatment, be it a regular doc or PDOC, shop around. They are, afterall, there to serve us, at least that's the general idea.Let me know how you are doing.

Paxvox: Many thanks. I'll keep an eye/ear out for insensitive ones around me. After a whopping migraine, I feel significantly better (relative to head pains) - will stick to the Wellbutrin and ponder other meds for anxiety. I wonder if being prone to migraines is indicative of certain/specific imbalances in chemicals - and if that should point me in a given medication direction. Enough of the continual pondering and on with the day. Thanks again. CLAIREZ

OK, now I tried this med, but it wasn't right for me, however, it is used for migraines and anxiety, to some degree (although it's lable usages by FDA are anti-manic and migraine). It is Depakote. I was given Depakote to help my sleep problems, but it has too many potential side effects vs. efficacy for my liking. You, however, may like it fine, as it would "kill two birds with one stone" so to speak.
