Effexor, other drugs and Sex Problems - Male

Posted by Hunter77 on July 11, 2001, at 20:14:46

I was on Prozac for years for fibromyalgia (rather than depression) and didn't seem to have much effect on sex life -
but started getting depressed and have been diagnosed with depression. Started having
problems maintaining erection and ejaculation / orgasm at same time as depression set in.
Doctor tried switching me to Wellbutrin (75 mg.) but didn't do anything for depression.
I had improvement in ability to have erection and orgasm for only a few days, then back to almost nothing.
After a couple of weeks, dr. tried doubling dose, same temporary effect for only a few days.
Switched to celexa, didn't do anything for depression or sex life. Now started Effexor (75 mg),
I'm having some some improvement in depression but I have problems getting erect, staying erect, and ejaculating.
Even if I ejaculate it is weak and not very satisfying. I'm also on Klonapin to sleep, started with
0.5 mg but will probably have to increase because it is not working as well anymore.
The problem is I'm just as horny in my head and am in the midst of trying
to resolve sex problems in my marriage. I've read that Wellbutrin is the one that is supposed
to have least side effects. Did I give up on it too soon (only was on for about 3 weeks)?
Will the sexual side effects go away over time or with increased dosages of Effexor?
What about klonapin? Anyone else out there with similar experiences?

I've been on Klonopin for years, with no negative sexual side effects. The SSRI a-d's are another story, however. I think they all mess that up, and it sounds like even tho' Wellbutrin is not an SSRI, it can also mess that up.

Hunter,

I've also had sexual problems on Effexor. I've been on it for 5 months. My psychiatrist is switching me to Wellbutrin.

I've read that the lowest common effective dose for Wellbutrin is 300mg per day. I've started with 100mg per day as we decrease my intake of Effexor. I was on 150mg of Effexor per day which is a common lowest effective dose for Effexor according to what I've read.

I've also been told that Wellbutrin can take up to 4-6 weeks to kick in. Therefore, I'm not sure that the doc gave you enough Wellbutrin for a long enough period. At the same time, your doc knows you best. I am not a doc and I'm new to meds.

Perhaps you should get a second opinion from another doc?
