Topamax and weight loss

Posted by Ludo on July 9, 2001, at 13:55:34

Hello,

I have just discovered today this message board which I found very interesting.

I searched informations about Topamax because I am taking it under the surveillance of my psychiatrist since mid-April of this year (almost three months) for weight loss reasons and am very happy with it. I have lost until now 16 kg (which I believe are 35.2 pounds).

So first of all I wanted to give this information to all the persons who are searching information on Topamax for weight loss. Although of course each person is different and that I am being careful with what I eat, I find it so much easier than before.

I upgraded the dose to a dose of 500mg a day which I take on evenings. At first it made me tired and I found it hard to wake up for wok in the morning, but I think it is getting better now.

The side effects which I have and which I read other people also have are feet strongly tingling. I had (at a lower dose) the tongue and lips which tingled when I would eat.

I would also like to say that I have been this last week ill. Doctors are not sure whether it is chicken pox (which I never had as a child) or something else. One doctor thinks it could be a reaction to the Topamax. I've been today to my psychiatrist who thinks it is not possible. What do you think. Has anybody ever experienced a reaction to Topamax that looks like chicken pox??? I really hope not because I'm so happy with the results of this medicine that I definitely would not want to give it up.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Ludo, from Europe.

Hi Ludo,

At what dose did you begin to notice the weight loss side effect?

I too have been placed on Topamax in an attempt to lose the weight gained on other meds. So far I have lost 3 lbs. in 10 days. But I am on a very low dose (75 mg) and I feel my appetite returning.

Do you attribute the weight loss to a change in appetite, metabolism, or both?

Congratulations on your weight loss! It is so great that your doctor responded to your concern about your weight and that you have had some success in taking it off. I don't mean to sound superficial but looking good does help us feel good.

Michelle

200 mg or above creates the weight-loss effect: Date: Thu, 18 Jun 1998 22:17:15 -0400
From: Ivan Goldberg < Psydoc@psycom.net >
Subject: Topiramate

When lamotrigine has been increased to the maximally effective or tolerated dose I will start topiramate 20 mg once a day and increase the dose in increments of 25 mg until the patient is taking 100 mg qid. Improvement may be seen at a total daily doses of 50 to 400 mg/day. Generally I increase the dose every four or five days. While I have seen some ataxia and have heard of some drowsiness, topiramate is usually well tolerated. _Appetite and weight reduction are often seen at doses of 200 mg/day and over_.

Well, I have to say that I am very jealous! I took Topomax (as a mood stabilizer) for about 9 months, at only 100mg/day, and lost about 40# gained on other meds. But I had to go off it because it gave me cognitive problems that were just intolerable: I couldn't remember words ("word finding"), and I couldn't put sentences together in the right order- things would come out of my mouth in very strange forms and I would have to try and laugh it off and correct myself. It also did not have any significant mood stabilization effects for me.

Recently, I decided to experiment and see if I could lose weight at a very low dose and not get the cognitive effects. But they came back at only 25mg/day- which was a lower dose than I had begun to experience them at the first go around. Perhaps my system somehow recognized the drug and relapsed? I did however start to lose weight again during my 3 week experiment even at that very low dose.

I think that the action must be metabolic. Meds that I am on now (Adderall at total 10mg/day, and Thyroid supplement) have reduced my appetite significantly, but I'm only infinitesimally losing weight.

Good luck- I hope your progress continues well,
Cece

Hi Ludo,
Like you this is my first time on this message board. I was trying to find information on Topamax
for weight loss and found this site. I have taken just about every pill I can think of to help with my weight and each time I find one that does work it seems it is taken off the market.
It seems as if this is working for you. I am
presently taking 20mg. Prozac once a day and along with appex (37.5mg) 3 tomes a day and Xenical as I wish. I have taken these for about 2 years now and I just get to a certain weight and thats as far as it goes. I really want to lose weight. Thanks for the infor.

Teardrop
