Does anyone take medication for both bipolar disorder and adult ADD (without hyperactivity)? If so, what medication do you take for the ADD and how does it affect your ADD and BP symptoms?
Thanks!

Hi, Josie,
The one I have found that works the best for the combination is Neurontin (don't get too high on the dose, though). Tegretol has been shown to help. Also Depakote helps, but it tends to dull you out at higher doses. Lamictal *might* work very well-but haven't tried it yet. You might be able to try a low-dose stimulant (esp. Dexedrine) successfully with the AC and not get you grouchy/dysphoric/panicky.

Hello Mitch,
Thanks for your insights! What you say is really interesting, because my son has done better on Neurontin by itself than on combos of other BP medications. Neurontin often is found not to work for people with bipolar, except the subset of those who started having mixed symptoms during their teens. Interestingly, this is the same group who are most likely to have co-occuring ADD. I suspect the Neurontin was enough most times of the year until he started a very demanding job about a year ago (network administrator), with some very busy times at work corresponding with the fall and spring seasonal "tough times." It now appears he will need an ADD medication, too.
Again, thank you!
Josie
