Panic from stopping Paxil or starting Zoloft?

Posted by Jackster on May 19, 2001, at 3:10:11

Hi.

I was on 40 mg a day of Paxil - went straight onto Zoloft (tapered up from 25mg to 50mg). Have been on Zoloft 50mg for 10 days - have been off the Paxil for 2 weeks. I am having Panic Attacks again (the Paxil was for PA Disorder but pooped out) and am not sure if this is from stopping the Paxil (which I suspect) or from starting the Zoloft. (or both).

Does anyone know? If it is a withdrawal sympton from the Paxil - roughly how long will it take to go away?

Also, does anyone know what dosage of Zoloft is equivalent to 40mg of Paxil?

Thanks
Jackie

I believe that 200 mg. of Zoloft is equivalent to 40 mg. of Paxil. I have taken Zoloft at 200 mg. per day, as well as 100 or 150 at other times.

I currently take Paxil at 20 mg. per day. Zoloft pooped out on me such that I was having PAs at 150 mg per day so I went to Paxil, carefully tapering the zoloft down and the Paxil up. I'm surprised your pdoc did not have you taper them together this way.

Anyway, I tried to cut the paxil down to 10 mg per day and had PAs returning. 20 is working for me now; nevertheless, I am toying with the idea of tapering off it and using only klonopin at a low dose every day or just every evening or even as needed since my PAs are sporadic and infrequent.

Anyone have any experience with doing what I am thinking of doing?
