Dr. Bob's fellow doctors speak highly of naltrexone in depression: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Aug-antidep-with-naltrex.html

Misc. Information:Kolodziej, Monika E et al. Comorbid alcohol dependence and depression. Current Opinion in Psychiatry. 13(1):87-89, January 2000:
"Specifically, Salloum et al. studied 14 depressed patients who had been maintained on antidepressant therapy but who continued to drink heavily. The addition of naltrexone resulted in a reduction of drinking, no increase in adverse events, and a slight improvement in depression."Naltrexone has few sexual side effects, and may even help men to perform sexually:
Meston, Cindy M. PhD. The Neurobiology of Sexual Function. Archives of General Psychiatry. 57(11):1012-1030, November 2000:
"Opioid antagonists such as naltrexone have been used to treat erectile dysfunction... Naltrexone vs placebo significantly increased spontaneous erections, morning erections, and coitus in men with erectile failure..."

Search through the archives for posts by WayneR. There was a lot of discussion here about Naltrexone about a year ago. I took it for a while as an augmentor and it did seem to improve my depression but nothing really dramatic.

There have been a few outstanding success stories here over the years involving Naltrexone. I tried it too, though it turned out to be neutral...nothing bad, nothing good. Mileage obviously varies considerably from one person to the next.
Anecdotal evidence suggests it works best when combined with an SSRI, with Prozac somehow offering the best potential.
If you haven't already, you might want to go to Dr Bob's Tips and check out doctor comments on Naltrexone for depression.
Though these next two comments are off the subject a little bit, I thought I would mention them. First, I like a glass of wine a few times a year. Since I don't drink much, I can get a real buzz off one glass of wine. I look forward to that mild wine buzz, even though I seldom drink. I was shocked to discover that I could not get a buzz off of alcohol when I was taking Naltrexone. It completely blocked the alcohol. It was strange to drink wine and have it be as tame as kool-aid. The other comment is nausea. Naltrexone often causes nausea when first starting it. I had to break my pill into tiny chunks. I started with the tiniest chunck and worked my way to the bigger ones. It took me a week doing this to get up to the desired dose level of 50mg. So if anyone else has a hard time starting Naltrexone, simply break a pill into little chunks to start with. Any nauseous side effects do go away fairly quickly.
