Flying Anxiety and Prozac

Posted by Laura Jane on May 6, 2001, at 12:28:02

Curious if anyone's taken a med to help with flying anxiety while taking other meds. I am on Prozac. I have a severe fear of flying but have recently decided to try to overcome it. I think I'd be ok if I could be unconscious during the flight. Has anyone taken Xanax or similar for this? My family suggests having drinks but I think that would make me more upset. Thanks.

Hi LJ. I too am terrified to fly. I used to have to get so drunk before my flight, that I was actually prevented by security from boarding once.(I don't recommend this) I find that 1mg of klonopin about 45mins before boarding allows me to relax enough to get through the flight & I feel a lot better when I arrive with no hangover. Ask your doc. Hope this helps. Take care.

PS Prozac can exacerbate anxiety for some folks.

I also have a flying phobia (and severe depression). I think Xanax or Ativan or Klonopin would be your best bet.

Prozac made my anxiety much worse. If you just need something for flying, you can just take something as needed. Xanax is short acting, Ativan is longer acting, Klonopin is like Ativan but doesn't treat my panic attacks as effectively. For flying, I find Xanax or ATivan to be best. For every day anxiety, I use Klonopin.

Good luck.

Easy street. Get a short acting benzodiazapine like most doctors prescribe for these situations.
Suggestions: Xanax, Ativan, Valium.
You might feel sleepy but these meds will help you with the present anticipatory anxiety.

Also, try CBT therapy if you haven't already to help to see if you can minimise the need for medication.

Best Wishes. I've been there!

Alan
