My 17 year old son has had active Mono for 16 months (blood work confirmed) and has been diagnosed with chronic Mono/ Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Can I have some advice on whether I should ask my doctor if antidepressants would give him a bit of energy. What might be some of the best ones for energizing. It has been devestating with his school work - missing so many days from the fatigue. Thanks in advance!

> Hi--
check out the thread about this on psycho-babble about children.
This is something that needs *expert* attention; it's a very common
phenomena and little understood. My daughter's case [as you'll read]
is rather extreme but her pdoc said that he has seen more than a few
adolescents who develop severe depression after mono -- and who knows
why. At this point, I don't think it's as important as immediate treatment.
Like your son, my 15 y/o was bedridden essentially for close to 2 years
until her depression became life threatening.
It matters little what anti-depressant is energizing: you need to find the
best adolescent pdoc available to prescribe what works for your son and his
particular neurochemistry, fouled up as it is by the mono. There is a growing body of literature on the subject but nothing substantial
so far in terms of practical treatment applications.Find the best pdoc, bring all your son's medical records -- better yet send
them ahead and save time -- and let her/him help you. And do it as soon as
possible.
Best,
S.

Might help. Might not.
What SalArmy4me suggested is Wellbutrin, a fairly common antidepressant with the side-effect of energy and appetite-loss.BUT, I suspect that anotehr problem might be mild vitamin/mineral deficiencies. It's not like people with mono eat much. Check with a good nutritionist/herbalist or holistic healer...here we have a great pharmacy with all of those, I hope you have the same. But anyway, my point is that some of the fatigue could be lessened or even eliminated with the correct supplements.
You could start with a basic B-complex and largish-doses of vitamin C. B-complex is known to be helpful with depression, and of course vitamin C is famous for bolstering the immune-system. Personally when I'm not feeling well I take 1000mg time-release C every day!
Good luck!
