zyprexa

Hi everybody,

I have been here in the shadows quite a while, but now I find myself curious about others experiences with the drug zyprexa. I would love to hear from anyone that has taken this drug, good or bad. Does it cause considerable sedation? Did it work for you? What are the main side effects etc. etc. I've also been here long enough to know the motto of the board: YMMV Thanks ever so much to everyone, and not just the ones that actually respond to my message. I have learned so much from all of you. It has been a pleasure to get to know ya'll.

Blessings to all
Kendra

Hey Cynthia,
YMMV-Your Mileage May Vary- Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. Another Question. Did the Zyprexa help you at all, and are you still taking it? Actually two questions, but who's counting.

Kendra- I had good results with Zyprexa but had to go off due to weight gain. I am now taking Seroquel. I am having success with it most of the time. I hope this helps.

If I had pick one of my meds to stay on and the rest to quit, I'd choose to keep taking Zyprexa. I take 5 mg of it about 6-7 hours before I go to bed, so you can tell that it doesn't sedate me. It seems to settle me down. It's hard for me to describe how it makes me feel. One thing I like is that I sleep like a log now. During the summer, people can mow their lawns right next to my window and I don't even hear it. The downside of Zyprexa is that it's well-known for causing major weight gain. I gained 30 lbs, but I suspect that the combination of other drugs I was taking contributed to the weight gain, too. I've now lost 15 of those pounds. My meds have been changed many times, but I've continued to take Zyprexa. There's supposed to be a new drug coming out that is similar to Zyprexa, but doesn't cause the weight gain. There have been a number threads about Zyprexa that are now in the archives, so you might want to search back a few months at a time to find them.

During my first day or two I was frieked out over the daytime sedation and drugginess. But that disappeared in just a couple days. I learned to take it at dinner, or maybe just a little earlier, so that its primary sedation would kick in about bedtime and mostly wear off upon waking. Gained 5 pounds. There is still a drugged feeling upon waking, but it disappears within an hour and is replaced by daytime energy and overall improvement in mood and social comfort. The only other side effect was restless rubbery legs, which subsided after about a week. I think Zyprexa holds great promise as a mood stabilizer and an antidepressant all in one, perhaps even more so when combined with another antidepressant. Very respectable med with a wide therapeutic action, in my opinion. But of course, it all really depends on the person's particular chemistry and how well the med matches that chemistry.

Kendra,

I am very happy with my Zyprexa. Prior to starting it I was having a lot of suicidal thoughts to the point of obsession. After the Zyprexa these almost disappeared entirely. Since I have felt a little better over the course of time I have tried to eliminate Zyprexa from my cocktail a couple of times (I don't know why) but I always felt worse when I stopped. One thing about it is that it works very quickly. If it works for you, you will notice it within a week.

I take 7.5mg at night and sleep well. The only bad side to it that I have experienced is the weight gain.

Pfizer was supposed to have a replacement for it this year but there were some cardiac concerns in their last set of testing and they had to go back to retest it in order to confirm or dispell their findings. Hopefully next year.

Any questions, please ask,
Chris

I know this was a message written a month ago but, I wanted to respond if anyone reads it. Zyprexa changes my life alot. I don't think about suicide all the time now and don't have depressing thoughts and anxiety anymore but, there is one bad side effect-Significant weight gain. It may be also because I am taking it with lithium also. I am now in the process of going to a psychopharmacologist for the first time in my life because I've gained 75lbs and can't stand it anymore and he is going to try changing me on different meds. I'll let you know what happens. Good luck to you. Oh also the new drug that's supposed to come out like zyprexa is called ziprasidone. I don't think it has been approved by the FDA yet but it should be soon and it say to be like zyprexa except no weight gain!!!!!!

Sorry to say that Zeldox, the replacement for Zyprexa from Pfizer has run into problems. In one of the test groups in the states there were some Cardiac problems. It doesn't look like it is going to be approved anytime soon even though it was scheduled for release this Spring.

BTW, this comes from a Zyprexa user and stock owner in Pfizer so I'm not too thrilled with the problem either.

Hi!

I just started zyprexa. Only 2.5 mg/day. Is that even a therapeutic dose? I am BPII, and have most recently been taking lamictol (lamotrigine). Had to stop because it made me ridiculously absent-minded, and occasionally (and unpredictably) gave me some blurred vision and light-headedness. Most of these are well-known side-effects. Someone mentioned that there is a new version of Zyprexa w/o the weight gain? I struggle with weight gain enough as it is!! Has that med been released yet?

Steve
