weight gain in general on meds.

Posted by Cin on February 27, 2001, at 12:21:15

I have read most of the post on weight gain while taking different meds....I'm not sure how to go about asking this since my head is kinda cloudy from the increase in doses of my meds.
Okey here goes....My SIL is on prednezone(sp) for her lupus and it causes her to gain weight...not by her caloric increase but by making her retain fluid and it swells her...She has gained 20 pounds on it.
Okey what I was wanting to know is if the weight you people are talking about that you gained from Wellbutrin and Effexor from it making you crave more, eat more or if it is like the prednizone she is on making her retain weight?
I know I was taking tranxene, xanax and it caused me to eat all the time and gain so much....I am panicing about the fact I could possibly gain weight on this med....Because Lord knows I don't need no help in the weight gaining department....I want to get to my goal weight this year.
Also another question is if when you go from like 75mg of EffexorXR to 150mg and from 200 mg of WellbutrinSR to 300mg per day if it causes the same side affects as when you first started the med?....I had already went from feeling the worst to almost feeling excellent back (now that med increase) to feeling like a zombie and no motivation again....am I normal. Is this what is suppose to happen with this med?...I have been on increased dose since last Thursday.

Thanks for replies.

You all have been very helpful to me!!!

Thanks!! and God Bless!!!

Cin ... the prednisone wt gain is not just water. It is much more complex. muscles get smaller & weaker, the ratio of lean muscle mass to fat is changed. This is hormonal /metabolic.

The AD & SSRI wt gain is not the same .... The metabolic mechanism has not been worked out yet.

The side effects of effexor dose increase is not as severe or long lasting for most folks as the initial startup effects

I do not know of any specific info on this, lean body mass vrs fat, for any of the ADs.

one must also remember that sex hormones change this ratio, as does diet.

One theory is that epi/norepi/dopamine are released in smaller amounts & have less muscle & general metabolic accelerant effects... so food is converted to fat & wt instead.

This is just a theory
