Lithium is the best thing to augment an antidepressant. Lithium works on serotonin and helps promote general mood stability. Improvement occurs _sometimes_ within 48 to 72 hours. For others, it could take 2 weeks.

I used Lithium to augment Parnate and saw results in one week. Other choices in augmentation would be pindolol or buspirone.

Just adding my experience here, for the record:

My pdoc was the first to diagnose me as bipolar II, and the first to treat me with lithium. Because was over 30 and had been depressed for quite a while, she cautioned me that it could take up to a year to really, really work. And it did take that long. I was also on synthroid and Effexor as well.

Lithobid is the form I tolerate best. I can even take it on an empty stomach, whereas other forms of lithium, even the liquid, make me nauseous even if I've eaten.

Pdoc also tried pindolol augmentation, and eventually replaced Effexor with a fairly heavy dose of Parnate.

Best wishes to you,

mars
