I have little faith in it. However, fish oil capsules are said to help depression. See Dr. Ivan Goldberg's hints for anxiety/depression at:

Vicki Lynn,

The following link may be useful to you. However, it is specifically for bipolar disorder (I'm BP II). At the very least, the link will get you started in the right direction. There is a bunch of information on the net regarding natural remedies (vitamins, supplements, etc). Some of the information is good, however, some sites are trying to pedal snake oil (my opinion). Here the link:

Do you have a dx? If not, take the online diagnostic test at:

Someone here at Psycho-Babble recommended the book called "The Diet Cure" to me, and I have found it useful. I think that vitamins can support emotional healing when combined with overall nutritional awareness and improvements in lifestyle (including getting enough sleep, stress management, resolving conflicts, exercise, etc.).

For women (and men who care about women), I recommend, "Screaming to be Heard," written by a female OB/GYN, which contains some of the most important and least publicized information about hormone balances and mood. It just came out in a new edition, and it is available from Amazon.com.

Best wishes,

Mark H.

> Fish oil does control bi-polar disorder and depression. Buy a good brand from the health food store that has a high level of EPA. Take 1 to 2 grams of EPA per day. My sister takes it for serious bi-polar / depression and it works great!

Thanks for the book info. Marc H. (np)

Hey -- dx before tx? Symptoms constant or variable? Consider charting monthly cycles to look for patterns? If PMS-like, post to me for some links
If you're taking BC pills -- check with gyn; some/many brands cause/increase depression. So too depo-provera shots and Norplant, in susceptible women.

Since I don't know your dx, fish oil for bipolar: search for Andrew Stoll, MD at Harvard Med, dept of Psychiatry. He did the orginal study on fish oil and bipolar.
Caveat: all Stoll's patients REMAINED on their pmeds during the study. Used as adjunct, not tx.
Also previous poster is correct; if for bipolar use ONLY at least 3:2 EPA to DHA. DHA can set off mania in bipolars.
Good luck.
L.

A vitamin B complex may well help; works for me. Brewers yeast is vitamin B in another form, it helps, but may cause gas.

I use GABA and 5HTP to deal with irritability and hyperventilating. Try GABA--it's a calming amino acid. Take 500 mg on an empty stomach. You can take up to 1500 mg a day my pdoc told me. I find if I take 1000 at a time I get a niacin type rush which I don't like. So if 500 doesn't do it for me, I take an additional 500 1/2 hour later.
