PROZAC DOSE: Should I increase It?

Posted by Joy on January 23, 2001, at 11:02:05

Hi. I am on 20 mg of Prozac for almost 3 weeks. I started Prozac while weaning off Zoloft which I was on for 7 weeks. I feel pretty good on Prozac but am interviewing for jobs this week and possibly the next few weeks. I see my psych in 2 weeks. I was thinking of trying 30 mg of Prozac to how it works; would I feel better or worse? I have never had side effects from this med. I do take .5 xanax generic 40 minutes before bedtime for the last 3 months. Should I try 30 mg or stay at 20? I could always go back to 20 if the 30mg did not work as well, right? Any opiniions? Thanks
Joy

Are you not feeling good enough on 20mgs? I was
on 20 for a long time, but my mood started dipping
so I switched to 30 and improved. Just wondering
why you want to increase if the 20 is doing well?

I do feel pretty good. I just wondered if I would feel even better on 30 mg. I think I am okay, but just wanted to possibly check out 30 mg to see. Not sure if I should.

Joy,
The fact that you have what sounds like *significant* improvement by week 3 is a good indication in itself. However, as I'm sure many of our 'experts' will confirm, ADs can take several (ie. 6-12 weeks) to achieve a full response. In the short run you are only going to increase side-effects (which you could well do w/o if you have a busy schedule ahead), thus possibly reducing compliancy on yr part, and all for (quite probably) no long-term gain.

*My* advice is to stick @ 20mg until you see yr pdoc (besides, doesn't Prozac only come in 20mg caps?).

Good Luck,
Jah.

I would probably agree with sticking with 20 mg until you see your doctor again. You may not yet have experienced the full effects of the drug and may have more improvement on 20 mg. after taking it a few more weeks. You can always add later if you feel that you are "improved" but not "better". I'm not sure if adding more now would make a difference in time for you to notice it in the next week or two.

FWIW, I took 20 mg for a few months then switched to 40 mg hoping for further improvement. I really didn't notice any difference in efficacy, but did have more side effects...ick.

PS - Prozac comes in 10, 20, and 40 mg capsules and in a liquid form (helpful for doses smaller than 10 mg).

Definitely stay on 20 mg. Prozac has a long half life. It will continue to build up in your blood for atleast 8 weeks or so. If you feel OK now after only 3 weeks, I would stay at 20 for atleast 3 or 4 months. After that, only increase it if you really need to.

Hello There,
I was on 20mg a day for almost three months and I then noticed it was not working as well for me. I talk to my Psych and we decided to increase it to 30mg and it helped. I would suggest staying with the 20mg for awhile ... especially if it is doing well for you. With a drug like Prozac it is an individual thing ... more is not necessarily better. And be sure if you want to increase the dose you talk to your Dr. first.
