Has anyone been using SAM-e for serious depression?
What's been your experience-how long, successes, problems, side effects, comparison w/drugs like Paxil, other SSRIs, MD recommendations in NY?

Harriet, I recommend you use the "search" feature at the top of this board. SAM-e has had a pretty thorough airing on this board in the past.

It's the best "med" I've tried (tried all the SSRIs, trycyclics, SNRI, etc, etc.). It was the best by far, but I needed upwards of 8-10 per day for it to be effective. That's the problem... at that rate I was spending $6-8 per day (at the best prices I could find!), and SAMe only treated about %50 of my symptoms, but no side effects! If this stuff ever comes down from the stratospere in price I will snap it up by the case full.
Anyway, I was seriously depressed and it did put a good dent in my symptoms, but the price made me discontinue it. What a bummer , huh?!?

...isn't back in commission yet, sorry, but that's next on my list of things to do. Follow-ups regarding this should be redirected to Psycho-Babble Administration, thanks.

Harriet - I have been taking SAM-e for over 2 years. I also take Celexa with it. This combo works good for me. You asked for an MD recommendation in NY. The foremost expert on SAM-e in the country is probably Dr. Richard Brown, a psychiatrist at Columbia University in NYC. You can get his number and call him. He does return calls if you leave him a message. He could either see you or if he can't, you could ask him for a referral. The best prices for SAM-e are at Costco or BJ's. BJ's sells NatureMade for $46 for a box of 80 pills of 200 mg each. Some BJ's stores sell the 400 mg pills which makes it a little more economical.
