Tickleing sensation in ear(s)?!

Posted by maribeth on November 4, 2000, at 10:48:36

Hi Ya'll
I have been on Effexor XR 300 mgm daily and Seroquel 300mgm daily for not quite a year. Recently my pdoc
added Topomax (I'm up to 150mgm/day). However even before all of this I was experiencing a weird "crawlie"
sensation in my ears. It feels as though there is a bug in there! It was always only one ear at a time.
Well, this past week it has gone to BOTH ears at once! It is just inside my ear on the upper
part. Anyone else ever experience this or hear of it -- its beginning to get to me... I also have tinnitus,
so I know what that is, and this is not the same at all. I've lived with that for years!! Help!! Maribeth

Hi-
I am not on the same meds as you-- I'm on Prozac (plus various asthma/allergy ones) but think I know EXACTLY what you're talking about! For a couple years (?I think, can't remember) I've had that same crawlie feeling in my ears, which I describe as a feeling that there is a string inside my ears and someone is pulling on it from the outside. It does not hurt-- it is just pressue, but damn uncomfortable and bothersome. I happens more in the evening, usually when I'm in my night classes. Stress? Sometimes also I get a sudden stop of sound and then a high pitched ringing in my ears. Tinnitus? What is tinnitus like? The crawlies in my ears have always been both at the same time. I asked my regular doctor about it and he looked in my ears and said they were fine. I don't care for him very much. I wonder what this could be? Laura

This is probably not the same thing, but I thought I'd throw it out to you anyway: I have had something similar for years even without meds. The sensation almost drives me nuts (as if I needed any help) if it goes on too long. Sometimes it comes on so suddenly that it makes me jump and it sends shivers up my spine. It turned out to be allergies. Dimetapp (antihistime/decongestant combo) takes care of it for me. Did you also get a rash or itchy skin while on any of these meds? This would increase the chances that this is a mild allergic reaction.

Sounds like cronic ear infections to me. Next time you get that feeling in your ear, go see your GP first.

Hello Maribeth,

I have read that Effexor can cause tinnitus.
When I first started to go on a higher dose of Effexor, my ears were really itchy but it eventually went away.

You may want to discuss this with your doctor and see what he/she says.
