Docs are Befuddled -- so far.. Any thoughts

Posted by Tracy on November 6, 2000, at 19:46:55

Ok -- I am tired. Very tired. I have been tired for four months. I can sleep for hours -- sometimes 20 or more. My eyes slam shut I am so tired -- get it?

Hypothyroidism and other thyroid illnesses have been eliminated. I am not anemic. I've had a complete physical and OB/GYN exam.

I take my AD at night (Effexor XR 225mg.). My Pdoc put me on ritalin to keep me awake (I am a law student). I had to keep increasing it (up to 30 mgs.). I felt like crap on it. Turns out it was pumping my bloodpressure up from 108/60 to 130/90. We stopped the Ritalin. He started me back on Wellbutrin SR in the interim (100 mg. in the morning).

I also take a multi-vitamin with iron, prilosec, and mircette (bcp) (all also at night).

I am still waiting for a sleep study due to difficulty getting me in. I don't snore. I don't wake up choking. When I do wake I feel like I have been in a coma -- very disoriented. Then the extreme tiredness starts again.

HELP HELP HELP.

MRI, EEG? Been to Africa lately? Could be a parasite. Trypano-something or other.

Ever had Mono?

Actually, Effexor makes me lethargic and sleepy all the time, though I take it in the morning. Could it be the Effexor or the prilosec or the combination?

Also, ever had chicken pox? I know it's a herpes virus, and I believe it's related to Epstein-Barr. I get shingles from it when I'm overstressed or depressed, and that makes me tired as well as everything else.

When your thyroid functioning was checked, what were the actual results of the tests(ie, numbers)? Lots of patients are deemed "normal" based on statistical norms, but may in fact by hypothyroid.

A sleep study is definitely a good idea. It could be Periodic Limb Movement Disorder, or some other sleep disorder.

I agree with the question about the effexor, as well, as some people do find it sedating (others, like me, find it activating).
