I have been on Zyprexa for the last 3 months and I feel relatively sane. The weight gain is quite depressing though, is there another similar med. that does not cause weight gain?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I've tried several. Of them all Amisulpride has no weight gain, at least for me anyway. Zyprexa had a lot of weight gain. Risperdal normally has less weight gain than Zyprexa and could be worth trying as a substitute. For Amisulpride you would have to order it from overseas, and you may or may not be comfortable with that kind of self-directed care. If you are, Amisupride. If not, Risperdal. With either though, as with everything, your mileage will vary. (Darn. I hate that part.)Other than that you might want to ask your doctor for something to stifle the appetite. Maybe Meridia or Ionamin or something. I don't know. It's worth asking though. If Zyprexa has you a bit too sedated or sluggish overall as a side effect, you could ask for a small dose of Adderall or Ritalin. These could perk you up a bit, if you would like that, and also stifle your appetite and cause you to burn more calories simultaneously.
In addition, avoid snacks between meals. If you must, have an apple or dried blueberries, dried cranberries, something like that. At mealtimes, make it a point to eat less than your eyes tell you to eat.

Hi Natg,Probably ziprasidone (Zeldox). In an analysis of antipsychotics and weight gain, among the atypical antipsychotics, ziprasidone was found to have the least potential to cause weight gain. The estimated weight gain after 10 weeks of treatment is 0.04 kg for ziprasidone as compared to 4.45 kg for clozapine (Clozaril), 4.15 kg for olanzapine (Zyprexa), and 2.10 kg for risperidone (Risperdal).
Unfortunately, Zeldox is not available yet in the US as it awaits final approval from the FDA.
This is the end of the thread.
