I was on Paxil for about five months and switched to Prozac because of weight gain, cravings and non-effectiveness. So far the Prozac has helped with the cravings, although I have only been on it a week.
Has anyone else experienced weight loss on Prozac?

I had the opposite experience on Prozac. It greatly increased my carbohydrate cravings. Basically, it seemed to mess with my blood sugar in general - I would get very "shaky" and upset if I hadn't eaten in just a couple/few hours. This went away after going off of the drug.

Prozac was the first medication I ever took for panic attacks. Within 6 months, I had gained 40lbs! And, I was the type of person who was on weight gain shakes just to maintain my weight...However, I have a good friend who gained 30lbs on Paxil, came off it in May, is now on Prozac and is still losing weight...

Kelly,
I currently transitioning from Zoloft to Prozac for the same reasons as you and have already gone down one dress size due to Prozac curbing my appetite. Because of PMS, my cravings are more intense but they're still not as bad as they would have been on Zoloft.
I am not a person who has to be a size 8 but it seemed like when I was on Zoloft, my weight was never going to stabalize. Once Zoloft started to cause problem in other areas, I felt it was worth it to take a chance on prozac.
Struggling with the transition and PMS isn't helping right now but I'm very hopeful it's going to work out. Hope it works out for you also.

I had weight loss on Paxil but bad side effects-paranoia, nervousness, nausea-and I was on it for months with no let up of the side effects so I got off of it.Effexor and Paxil are what I take now. The combination does not effect my appetite. In fact, I eat less now, especially since I got off Risperdal.
Good luck with the Prozac. I know many people do well on it.

> > Has anyone else experienced weight loss on Prozac?I started taking Prozac for OCD when my first baby was seven months old. I had gained 60(!) pounds during my pregnancy and was still carrying 20 of it. By the time he was 11 months old, I had lost it all and was actually about 5 or 10 pounds thinner than I was before I got pregnant. Prozac just made it easier to stick with healthier eating and lessed my cravings for sugar. It also seemed to make me more energetic; I walked with my baby in the stroller for an hour three or four times a week (which I cannot imagine doing now).
Unfortunately, I quit Prozac due to the sexual side effects. I gained back 5-10 pounds in the next year or so (which put me right about at my pre-pregancy weight - not terribly bad). That was fine....until I got pregnant again. I did not lose the baby weight the second time without the help of the Prozac. In fact, depression which has developed in the last six months or so has actually contributed to my having gained weight after having the second baby. I am actually eating less (eating isn't pleasurable lately), but more of what I do eat is either fast food or the calorie-laden stuff my husband likes to make (because I don't have the energy or interest in cooking). I have totally abandoned exercise (no energy or motivation). I am hoping that Effexor will help in the same way that Prozac did; if not, maybe I will go back to Prozac despite the side effects.

P.S. -- I think all of these medications have different effects on different people. I have an aunt who went from 140 to 110 in a year on Paxil (depression is rampant in my family). She says it just makes most food unappealing to her and she doesn't get hungry anymore. Go figure.

Hi Shirley-
I, too, switched from Zoloft to Prozac due to weight gain. I didn't think I was eating more so I was shocked when I started gaining weight for no apparent reason. Prozac has not caused me to gain any more weight, which is good, but it has not helped me to lose any either. I get bad carbohydrate and sugar cravings. Usually there is other stuff going on when this happens and food is my number one way to deal. Good luck on the prozac. It's nice to know, even though it sucks, that other people gain weight on zoloft. Laura

I was on Prozac for two years, during which I lost 15 lbs and felt wonderful. When "Prozac poop-out" began to happen, I went off it, gained all the weight back and more! It should be noted that I was also exercising daily on it (15 miles of biking each day) and once I went off Prozac I also didn't exercise as much, but it was *very* easy to lose weight while the Prozac worked.
Now it doesn't work at all for depression *or* weight loss for me. I wonder why that happens.
This is the end of the thread.
