Sleeplessness and Effexor

Posted by R.Anne on October 22, 2000, at 19:10:32

I am taking effexor and paxil. I was also taking risperdal and discontinued it over a week ago. Now I am having problems sleeping. I wake up about 10 times a night. I've had to take an ativan a few times to sleep. I was taking 2-3 effexors and I can take either dose. So, maybe taking 2 instead of 3 when I get up would be better. Does the sleep problem go away is what I wonder. I really don't want to stop taking the effexor because it's helped my mood a lot.

James here....

How late is your last dose of Effexor ? Perhaps moving to Effexor
XR would help.

R.Anne, I agree with James...I take Effexor-XR in the morning (all at once), and it still makes me stay awake at night...the best remedy has been to take Seroquel at bedtime (then I sleep marvelously and feel wonderful when I wake up!).--Cindy W

I also have to agree with taking the Effexor XR all in the morning. I take mine as soon as I wake up. I have had problems sleeping at night (unable to sleep, but still just as tired - how ironic) when taking it anytime after 10:30 or 11:00 a.m., so now I make sure I take it as early as possible.

I found Paxil caused insomnia as well. I now take effexor xr in the morning, but also serzone in the evening, which counters the insomnia (and other overactivating effects) of the effexor xr.

Let's make it unanimous: Effexor XR first thing in the morning!

I take 225mg and 10mg Prozac. Some days I have trouble sleeping, but that's normal for me.

The first week I took Effexor, I was awake all night a few times. Still, I felt better than I had on the drugs I was taking before that! And the sleeplessness went away after about a week.

Good luck!

R.Anne here: I do take Effexor XR and as soon as I get up-lately it could be 1pm. though, so maybe I ought to set a clock to get up and take it earlier. Thanks for all the replies. I didn't know that paxil can cause insomnia, too. I ended up taking a .5 ativan around 6 a.m. to get some sleep but I don't want to do that all the time. So, I will set the clock to take the effexor good and early-thanks all!

The thing is, some people find Paxil sedating, and others find it activating. I am in the latter category--all serotonin increasing meds do this to me.
