A friend of mine who is still somewhat scared of antidepressants is resisting taking them, because she is still, though less often, weaning her 34 month old son. She's a single Mom without much support structure or money. Her doctor tells her to wean, but she has all kinds of research about the world average being 4 years. She's also very worried about possible weight gain, as she still hasn't lost all of her pregnancy weight. She was interested in wellbutrin, and I realized that I don't know anything about whether wellbutrin is secreted in milk and what its effects are likely to be?
Thanks,
Abby

Abby, the only antidepressant that is considered acceptable while breast feeding (or pregnant) is Prozac, and even then it is not known whether it is completely safe.
As far as your friend's weight, the breast feeding may actually be the problem. Many women don't drop weight until they STOP breast feeding, because while breast feeding, the body tries to hold onto the fat stores in case (as in caveman days) the food runs out. It's very unfortunate that we can't get our bodies to understand that in America there's always plenty of food around! At 34 months old, I'm sure her child will not suffer any health problems at all if she stops breast feeding. Actually, she will probably have more of a problem with the child NOT wanting to stop breast feeding.
Hope some of this helps. CarolAnn

I would not recommend breast feeding while on any medication with the exception of apririn, or mild antacids.

Hi, there are anti-depressant she can take and not have to wean. I was in the same boat (only my daughter was younger). Zoloft is what they gave me. It turned out I couldn't handle the side effects, but that's another story. Anyway, if your friend isn't nursing all that often there her choice in drugs is much wider.
Anyway, here is the site:

this site was very helpful to me not only for AD's but other meds. -Good luck to her
