Effexor XR, Binge Eating, Sleepiness

Posted by Tracy on August 1, 2000, at 22:18:08

I was put on Effexor xr for binge eating disorder. I have been on Celexa for the last year, and started Wellbutrin SR 6 months ago, but was told to discontinue (2 weeks ago).

1)I have read several posts about weight gain...! Has anyone heard about its use for Binge Eating????? Or was a boo-boo made in putting me on this drug?

2)I am exhausted. I have started sleeping better at night... but now am tired during the day (I can come home from work and take a nap from 5-11, and get up to go back to bed). Is it because the WB is leaving my system? The effexor is not high enough (has anyone experienced increased energy on Effexor?)? Or what? I still take Celexa, 40mg in the morning, and will be tapering that off soon. I take 75 mg. of Effexor at night --

Help.

Tracy: I've been on Effexor XR and Clexea for a year. If anything, I can report the opposite: I have lots of energy and have lost weight. This is due, in part, to the Effexor's dopamine action (but you have to be on a high dose to get it: 225-300 [for me]). It doesn't seem counterintuitive for someone with eating disorders to be put on Effexor since a semi-cousin of Effexor, Wellbutrin, is frequently used for eating d/o. The one thing I can tell you about Effexor is that it simply takes time to work. As do all of these meds. The main trap, I believe, that many people fall into is not giving the meds a chance to work and, additionally, failing to realize (actually: accept) that any medicine is going to have side-effects. Hope this helps. PS: I BELIEVE that Effexor is almost always givin in the morning not evening, but I could be wrong.

Hi Tracy:

I tapered off from 300 mg of Serzone over four days, took 37.5 mg of Effexor xr for one week and am now on 75 mg. My appetite is zilch. I was taking my pill at 7 p.m. but could not sleep at all. I now take it at 10 a.m. and can sleep again. Ahhhhh! So far, so good. I'm a little drowsy during the day, but it's getting better. I'm sure you've heard this before; meds work differently for different people. Give it some time and see how you feel.

Good luck to you, Cakes

My appetite has really settled down on Effexor. i was binge eating alot fo previous meds, but Effexor xr has calmed this, and maybe even reduced my appetite a bit.

as for the energy.. First time I was put on Effexor, I didn't sleep and was constantly kind of "wired", but this time it's been combined with Thiorizadine (which bought me down alot when I forst went on it), and things are pretty well balanced now. I have more energy than I have on any other med, and no head fuzzyness at all. I take 300mg (150mg am and pm) and 40mg of the thiorizadine.

Good luck

Nikki
