Hi, this is my first post so I don't really know the procedure that well.
I've been diagnosed by my present and for now only pdoc as bipolar. When I was forcibly committed to the psychiatric ward at St. Joseph's Hosp, that pdoc also said I was bipolar, plus 2 therapists have agreed, so I guess I am bipolar. I suffer also from panic attacks, general anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and social phobia.
I've been seeing this pdoc for about 4 years. He has me on prozac, xanax, seroquel, effexor xr, neurontin, and my pcp has me on synthroid.
For the last couple of years I've been VERY unhappy with my pdoc. He scares me. I tell him that a drug upsets my stomach and he tells me to keep taking it regardless. If I ask for a change in meds he gets angry. He allows me about five minutes a month. And he is writing scripts before I walk in the door. I've told him lately that my depression seems to be getting worse whereas my mania is pretty much stable. All he said was that I was so much better than I was four years ago, which is strange because since that time I've slit my wrist, took 1 morphene, 3 codeines, 4 darvasets (sp) and 4 xanax's at the same time. The police had me commited for 72 hours for examination. And that happen just a few months ago.
I live in the Tampa area. If anyone knows of a good pdoc in the Tampa, FL area who specializes in my problems, please let me know. I'm at the end of my rope!

Hi, Karen B.
Actually I graduated from Zephyrhills, but I work in Tampa. Thanks for the advice. By the way, do you like your pdoc, if so could you email me his name if that is more comfortable for you?
I really need help. I don't have the energy to go through the yellow pages and was hoping to find someone great by word-of-mouth.
Thanks so much for answering.

I no longer live in Tampa...wish I could help. I'm now in Colorado.
I think the best possible way to find a good one is to call the med school at USF, ask for a professor of Psychiatry and get some referrals. That's a really good place to start.
Just do it! I wouldn't endure even one more appt. with that doctor!

Karen,
Thanks for your help. My sister went the USF route but didn't get any help. She found a great pdoc, but he doesn't do sisters. Dr. Sheehan is no longer taking patients, and the other guy lives in Miami. That's a little too far for me to travel under any circumstance.
Thanks for your post.

Thanks, Jules. I does my heart good to hear that you want to help me. I'm trying a new pdoc tomorrow. He also does therapy as well, so at least I'll be getting more than 4 minutes of his time.
You're a very nice person, thanks a lot.

cag,
If you find a really good one, please post the name. My mom still lives there and has a real loser for a doctor. He gave her five SSRIs in a row and when the fifth didn't work, told her he "couldn't help her." Can you believe that one? She is 70 year old and suffers dysthymia, fatigue, apathy just like me. We split the shipping cost on some Adrafinil and are both doing better. She is on day six and has more energy each day. I can't wait to see if the cognitive functioning benefits are there for her in the next couple weeks. My great aunt and grandfather both have Alzheimers dementia and my mother thinks her memory is going and is afraid. I have told her that depression can affect memory and try to be as encouraging as I can. I just pray the Adrafinil works. Regardless, she needs to have a real doctor. Let me know, OK? You can e-mail me if you like.

Karen,
Sad Cag or Cag the Sad, or whatever she calls herself on here (LOL) is my sister. She may not answer your post since I don't think she's monitoring this site, but feel free to email me if she doesn't respond. She did find someone through word of mouth, and she loves him. She had her first appointment today. Her old pdoc was the same jerk who gave me my walking papers. When she eventually found out about it, she refused to continue treating with him. The old guy was everything she said AND worse. However, being happy is the best revenge.

cag,
So, did you like the new p-doc? What, specifically, did you like about him/her? My mom needs a doctor - can you post the name if you feel good enough about this person to recommend them?
BTW, the best French restaurant in the world is right there in river city. On Cypress, right off Dale Mabry Hwy., you'll find an unpretentious little stucco bldg called "Monte Carlo." Lunch is not too expensive and casual. I used to meet my husnad there every Friday. I recommend the Tournedos Rossini. Don't forget the Chocolate Mousse - light, airy and wonderful. Say hi to Margaret for me. Bon Apetite!
Thanks!

Karen,
Well, in a fit of what some might call mania, my sister has managed to destroy a second computer (she only bought this one in December, and purchased a service warranty) and is off to buy a new one. I have no idea when we'll see her here again.
She likes this new pdoc since he lets her talk, and that's what she needs. She was worried that he might be angry with her if she had problems with a med (like her last pdoc), and he assured her he wouldn't, but he did expect her to take her meds. From what I've heard, he sounds friendly and sympathetic. However, in case your mom is smoke sensitive, be aware that he smokes a pipe during his sessions, but it didn't seem to bother my sister. He gave her at least an hour the first visit (which wasn't cheap), but from now on she'll get a full 30 minutes, and her insurance will cover most of it.
Since I've never seen him personally, I can't recommend him on here, although I would have no problem seeing myself from everything I've heard. If you're still interested, feel free to email me and I'll give you his name.
Monte Carlo? That sounds familiar, but I'm not sure I've been there. Was it in an old pink building? I like the "not too expensive" part, by the way.
