Posted by Billb on June 27, 2000, at 19:54:18

On paxil for 8 weeks. Have not been hungry so I have lost a very needed 25 pounds. Have had better sex than ever - firing out of both barrels for the fist time in a long time. Has not done a whole lot to help with my social anxiety - but hey, life is getting better. Shoule I be happy?

Billb, sounds to me like reason to cheer. I'd be happy if my libido were completely normal and I could lose 25 lbs.! Am losing a pound or two per week, and my libido (while not dead like it was on other AD's) is sort of asleep at times (on Effexor-XR). Don't know why your social anxiety is still there, but hey, if life's getting better, you're doing something right!

Bill,

You actually made me laugh...which makes me hope that you are feeling good enough to joke around about it. I, too, have found that Paxil has improved my sex life, which is really weird because I read all these warnings that decreased libido is a side effect of Paxil. I last much longer, which makes my girlfriend happy too. I would certainly like to lose about 10 pounds, too, unfortunately, hasnt done that for me.

I hope you get some results for your anxiety. Many people have had great results, and 8 weeks is longer that normal for the drug to take effect, but I read somewhere on the www.paxil.com website that there were cases that took longer for effect. I wish you the best...

I feel like I should say this...whatever the case, (and you have probably heard this before), but MAKE SURE you consult with your doctor (before/during) a decision to quit taking the drug...as there can be extreme side effects to stopping.

>> Thanks Rick and Cindy. I wish you both the best also. Do you have any suggestions regarding dosage or regarding supplemental medications to help with the social anxiety? I am currently taking 40 mg Paxil.

Bill,

I have found that ativan 0.5mg does alot of good for my anxiety...I suppose that any benzo would help with that. I like ativan at that dosage, because many times, it is all I need to just "take the edge" off the crappy feelings...muscles burning...dizziness, etc. But the more intense my anxiety, the more ativan I can take since it is such a low dosage.

The thing to remember is that ( I think ) all benzo's can be habit-forming, at least I know ativan and klonopin are. I think valium is a benzo too. So, it's best to use them as needed, as opposed to taking on a regular schedule. Hope this helps a little. Best to talk to your doctor in any case.

Re: Paxil + buspar + pindolol

Have been reading & digging thru the babble archives.

Pindolol is a unique beta blocker that may boost a SSRI & has some mild anxiolytic properties on its own. Buspar works for anxiety but is slow to start & expensive.

Buspar + pindolol is more effective than buspar alone. The pindolol speeds up initial response time as well as increases the buspar response. Buspar seems to work about 50% when used alone.

The combo of the 3 meds is reported to be quite effective if you can tolerate them. Response in the 80% range ?

The benefit over a benzo ( with klonopin probably the best choice of the benzos ) is lack of dependency risk.

YMMV
