Zoloft: Loss of effectiveness over time?

Posted by pete on June 19, 2000, at 9:55:47

Hello. I have been on Zoloft for about 5 weeks or so.
I noticed a good change after about 2-3 weeks, in the sense that I felt less irritable
over smaller things and also more temper tolerant. I have noticed somewhat of
a hiatus in the 'good' feelings and feel more irritable feelings creeping in.
The dosage I use is 100mg, 1 time a day. Anyone out there that can give me any input with a similar experience?

Thanks

The "poop out" as it is called, is experienced by many users of AD's. When this happens, increasing the dosage usually does the trick. Since you are only at 100mg, just bump the dosage up to 150mg. After three months on effexor, I noticed that I slowly became depressed again as it began to loose it's effect gradually. I went off the effexor in December and started back on it in April. This time around, I did not get the same benefit as I did the first times while on effexor. Good luck!

> Hi
I have tried many drugs to combat my depression. Zoloft has been a miracle drug for me. I feel normal again!!! I take 150mg every morning and I feel fantastic. I have been on Zoloft since last Feb and so far so good.. I wish you luck and hope you'll seek out a higher dosage of Zoloft before you give up on this drug!!! Take care!

I have been on the Zoloft for 7wks. I am starting to feel the irritability kick in. I recently started Buspar (10 mg d). I am hoping this will do the trick. The thing with Zoloft that I realized is what others have feared: it tends to take care of the unhappiness, but gives you a hyperactivity that at first feels good, but as time goes on this hype turns into a sort of mania that can be scary. The Buspar helps me control that anxiety. You might ask. What is your dx? (Diagnosis) if you don't mind....

I was on Zoloft for about 9 months @ 100mg /day. There was an agitation, tremour that never quit. Also had poor memory & mildly fuzzed thought.

In retrospect, I think that either there were zoloft side effects or the primary depression was not fully treated. Pdoc could not decide which & neither can I.

My Symptoms are much better on different med (celexa).

Your problem sounds quite similar with a good chance that there is inadequate treatment. Would discuss this with the pdoc.

I'm having the same problem--to the extent that I was ready to pitch what meds were left in the bottle (btw, I take 100mg daily). And, also, I never adjusted to the little "tremor" thing and found that it did not cure my agitation ... plus seemed to make my memory worse.

I've been taking Zoloft for nine months, but feel that I've hit a plateau ... and I'm too frustrated with my doctor to suggest that she "up" my dosage or switch to something else. As it is, I ~hate~ putting chemicals in my body regularly, let alone adding to the menu.

If I indeed do approach my doc about switching my meds, what should I know about other AD's? Are there other common ones which are better than Zoloft that don't seem to have that plateau effect?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sher

Sher,

Hard to say for some else always, anyway, here goes.

The celexa, even at 20mg /day, has been better than the zoloft ever was, in terms of mood & side effects. It still has that damn tremor, though.

What has helped greatly with the tremor & agitation has been Inderal. 20mg 4x a day. seems to last about 6hrs. Have been trying to get to a 40mg bid dose but that slows HR more & does not quite go 12 hrs. The q6 hr dose is a pain in the rear.

It has gotten rid of most of the shakes, jitters, anxiety symptoms that I have.

The other 2 beta blockers that I have seen quite a few posts from happy users of, are Tenormin ( which can be taken 1 x a day ) & pindolol ( bid dose ).

All 3 may potentiate the anxiety blocking effects of SSRIs & benzos, with pindolol having the best pharm reasons. They all 3 treat the tremor as well. Some people report that beta blockers can fog the sensorium, but that is usually in people over 65.

It may be worthwile to consider upping the zoloft to 150 or 200 /day & adding a beta blocker ?

Hi, I this is my first post. I have just started taking Zoloft too, about 3 1/2 weeks ago. The last couple of days I have notice that I am also getting irritated easily and getting hyper. I only take 50mg per day and I was wondering if I need to up my dosage. I too feel better as far as the depression goes, but are noticing that I am getting "short".
