Giving Blood while on Celexa

Posted by Steph on June 11, 2000, at 9:04:48

Yesterday was a pretty hot day. I had read in the papers that there was a great need for blood so I moseied down to the blood bank---something I have done every eight weeks or so for the past five years. Never had a problem until Yesterday---I ran some errands after donating--felt great. I was waiting with my elderly uncle for the barber to cut his hair when I got so dizzy and faint. I just laid down on the floor with my feet propped up. THen when it didn't pass I decided to try and leave and threw up my very light lunch. My husband had to come and get us. It scared my uncle. SO I drank lots of water and rested quietly all day. At night I was plagued with stomach cramps. I was wondering if any of you had experienced sommething similar while on ADs? Could this just be dehydration and heat? Today I feel like I went through a bad time. HAs me thinking I should give up giving blood. Tha t woulf be a shame. I also recently signed up to be a bone marrow donor. It is something I feel strongly about and would be very sad to not be able to follow through.

It sounds like heat to me. I checked with a friend who runs a blood bank about giving blood if you're taking anti-depressants, and he said many of his donors take anti-depressants and have no problem with giving blood. He hadn't heard of any problem with Celexa or any other AD.

Call your blood bank and discuss the problem frankly with the head person. If they don't know about your problem, they'll never make any meaningful correlations -- just in case. Most centers need donors desperately and will work with you to find solutions to anything that impedes your ability to donate -- they don't want you passing out after you leave or suffering any other problems. If Celexa turns out to be a problem, they are going to want to know about it.

As you know, heat increases circulation and can drastically lower blood pressure. I've had heat prostration twice and heat stroke once when I was much younger. The symptoms you describe are suggestive of heat prostration (very unpleasant), and giving blood that day probably didn't help the situation.

By the way, thank you for giving blood and for offering marrow. Your generosity saves lives.

Thanks Mark for your kind reply. I am inclined to agree. I have read that once you have suffered heat prostration you are suseptible to having it again and that is the case with me. I will be more careful and not try to be super woman on days I give blood. I did call the blood bank
and they were so helpful. Thanks again.

You had only been on the Celexa for 1 month-4 wks
Since one problem with Celexa at startup is vasomotor
instability, as noted by BP lability, giving blood on
a hot day at 4 wks is probably not a good idea.
Prudence would seem to say wait 6-8 weeks before blood
donation. There are many variables, such as had your
BP been stable ? for the 4 wks , etc ? The hot day
probably did not help.

On Zoloft it took me 8 wks before BP was stable.
Have been on Celexa for a little over 2 wks now. still have
significant BP surges that are not fully controlled with
Inderal. This would seem to indicate that giving blood
in the first month is not the best idea, because of the
cardiovascular stress created.

something to think about.

Thanks, Your reply is very informative. My bp was a little different but not much than what I have observed in the past. I knew that bp is an issue with zoloft--I have a student who has a daily bp check by the nurse. Mine was 117/74. I usually run 110/80.
By August 5th, my next donation day everything should be alright if what you are saying is true.
Thanks again,
Steph
