Hi All,
My son, age 8, is on Zoloft and Adderall. We have also been giving him Zyrtec for allergies. Recently we ran out and I didn't fill the prescription immediately. So he was without the daily Zyrtec for a least a week, but I'm not sure how long, it may have been more. Usually he is tense and irritable and lately he's been a pretty mellow fellow. Yesterday we started the Zyrtec again because he was getting congested. Today, his teacher told me that he was covering his ears in class (usually a sign of noise stress for him) and he seems to be in a funk.
Does anyone know if there are any interactions between Zyrtec and Zoloft or Adderall?

Sara - I don't know about the Adderall, but Zoloft inhibits the cytochrome P450 system (liver detoxifying system - CYP-3A3/4) to a •very mild extent•. In theory, it could raise the concentration of the Zyrtec in the body, but whether this would be to any clinically significant extent, I doubt it (at least, not in most people).Your son may be sensitive to the Zyrtec. Some of this drug's side effects are: nervousness, emotional lability, abnormal thinking, anxiety, impaired concentration, and agitation. All of these occur in less than 1% of people taking Zyrtec. Children are sometimes more sensitive to the side effects of medication.
Report these side effects to your son's doctor. It may require a lowering of the Zyrtec dose. (I am assuming that the doctor told you to give your son Zyrtec, as it is not recommended for those under the age of 12 in Canada without a doctor's advise.)
Maybe a combination of CYP-3A3/4 inhibition and decreased sensitivity to the side effects of Zyrtec is causing your son's reactions. I am not positive though. Talk it over with your doctor. The resolution may be as simple as lowering the Zyrtec dose a bit.
Hope this helps - Cam

All of the above side effects are pretty normal behavior for my son. So sometimes its hard to tell if he's having some reaction to a med until I observe him over a few days. I'll ask his pediatrician about it. I have found in some of the info about Zyrtec that it shouldn't be taken with SSRI's but it doesn't seem to indicate a severe interaction.
Maybe he was just having an off day. I'll have to observe him again without it.
THanks much-
Sara T.PS. Your posts are so appreciated, and more so in your time of grieving. You are in my thoughts.

Hmmm....I've been Dexadrine and all allergy meds together with little problem but many ADD'ers
have reactions (sleepy or wired) to many antihistamines, even the nonsedating ones like Zyrtec. I would suspect it could be just the Zyrtec or he is getting additional stimulation from the Zyrtec which is too much as he is on Adderal. Zyrtec, Allegra, and Clairtin are all nonsedating/few side effects, so try another, I listed them in my order of preferance, Allegra is short acting, a day at most, so you know quickly
how he reacts and any negatives stop with in a day or so. Clairtin is long acting and a weaker antihistamine.Cam quoted the side effects that happen in 1% of the studies. Some people with ADD seem to be very sensitve to meds and will often have these rare side effects.
