Feel poisoned by Risp -- Cam or ChrisK

Posted by CraigF on June 5, 2000, at 19:17:28

In lieu of prompt (or any) response from my doctor...HELP ME CAM!!!

As you may recall, I moved down from one full mg of Risperidone to a half after becoming overheated, nauseous, dizzy at work several weeks ago. Fine. I tried doing half in a.m., half at night, but I could not stay awake.

I was having a great time on just half at night again (some energy, more confidence, less fear of others, good libido) for about five days, and BOOM!!!...halfway through the day on Monday, I start feeling dizzy and drugged.
Back comes the serious nausea, drugged feeling, overheating. I had to leave work!

Last time this happened, the doc said my body couldn't handle one mg. I only take .5 (my starting dose, BTW)now. I also had two beers on that night and several beers last night. But I've had more to drink on other occasions without this happening.

Also...I take 400 mg Serzone and my blood levels of that are low b.c. I ran out after Friday night's dose. Could that be a factor?

Is it possible that the part of this drug I enjoy is more the body's adjustment to a new dose and NOT the theraputic mechanism of the drug? Even though dosing half at night and half in the morning didn't make me ill, it sedated me and feeling enthusiasm/motivation is half the battle for me in my illness.

I am far from an expert (just someone who has taken a lot of different meds) but I would guess that the sudden withdrawl from Serzone has more to do with it than the Risperidone dose. When I took Risp. I was feeling sedated but not nauseous.

Did you decide to go off the Serzone or did you just run out? Most Ad's need to be weaned off. Please let your doc know what happened when you see him/her again.

Best wishes that you get through this quickly.

Craig:
Risperdal made me quite nauseated when I decreased the dose. In fact, I was nauseated and had diarrhea for a couple of days (I am also on Depakote, but remained on a stable dose of it while tweaking the Risperdal dose). Obviously, withdrawing from the Serzone could have contributed, but I wanted to throw this anecdotal evidence into the line of posts :)

Thanks for posting guys.

Lin: Was the nausea accompanied by tingling in the face, hot flashes, racing thoughts at night?

Did it go away and did the theraputic effect ever return? I'd love to know. I felt better yesterday evening until I took my .5 mg dose again and it all came flooding back. I needed Ativan to stop my mind and get to sleep...my poor liver.

Beer on risperdal? Stopping serzone w/o tapering? I think you may have part of your answer. You also sound quite sensitive to risperdal, I'm on 4mgs/day and like Lin also exhibited withdrawal-nausea, headaches when suddenly decreasing the dose (I was on 6mgs!), but I can get pretty manic. Hope you feel better, but my money is on the abrupt cessation of your AD. Take care.
