Paxil discontinuation

Posted by Mary Tracy on May 26, 2000, at 14:29:13

I have a simple question I hope...I have been on a low dose of Paxil (20mg) for 31/2 years. I went off it cold turkey about 6 days ago. I noticed the "electrical impulses" almost immediately but felt that if that was the only side effect that I could handle it. The impulses seem to have lessened although they are still around but another side effect seems to be numbness on my mouth and tongue. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of these symptoms and also how long do the symptoms generally last after going off of Paxil. Other than those two symptoms I feel good.. not so tired all the time. Thanks for any answers!

Mary - Yup, sounds like symptoms of serotonin withdrawl syndrome. Ask your doc about this. Perhaps you should go back on half the dose (10mg or 1/2 of a 20mg tab) for a week, then 1/2 a tab (10mg) every second day for a week. This should minimize the symptoms you are feeling.

Or, you could ride out the withdrawl for another week or so. It should start to abate soon. The shorter acting serotonergic antidepressants (esp. Paxil, Effexor and occasionally, Luvox, Serzone, Celexa and Zoloft) will cause serotonin withdrawl syndrome if stopped cold turkey. It is mostly seen with Effexor and Paxil, though.

Hope this helps - Cam.
