Clomipramine vs. Paroxetine

Posted by Anderson on May 15, 2000, at 23:14:21

I have social phobia and panic disorder. I´m taking 75 mg of Anafranil for fifty days (Tricyclic Antidepressant - Clomipramine). I´m feeling better and better. I know that still is a low dosage, but I and my psychiatrist resolve to attempt the Paxil (SSRI - Paroxetine), to see how I will to react with this medication. He said to stay one day without Anafranil, and then I will begin with Paxil.

My question is: Is there any problem with this change? And if I don´t feel good and go back to Anafranil, is there any problem with the re-change?

Anderson - Sorry I missed your post. It has been a little hectic here the past few days.

There should be no problem switching directly to Paxil from clomipramine. Even though the two drugs are from different drug classes (SSRI and TCA, respectively), their actions in depresssion, anxiety disorders, OCD, and anxiety disorders are similar. Paxil is a less toxic drug in overdose and is generally considered equivalent to clomipramine in effect, but if it doesn't work (give it 8 weeks) you should have no problem switching back to the clomipramine. Actually, because you have been taking the clomipramine, the Paxil may show full effects a little sooner.Paxil side effects like nausea dizziness and headache, if you get them, are transient and should disappear in a week or two.

Hope this helps - Cam
