Prozac with small dose of Serzone

Posted by ruth on May 8, 2000, at 15:38:11

I recently read in a book that prozac combined with a
very low dose of serzone (like 7 mg's) is sometimes
successful in treating sexual side effects...anyone
ever tried these two together before, or perhaps a little
serzone with an ssri? (I've tried Wellbutrin and I was
just too moody and irritable on it, serzone too, but
maybe at that low a dose, combined with an ssri, it
would be ok--I also remember having *really* good sex
on serzone.

I remember real good sex with Serzone too. Mmmm. Good memories. Too bad I got more depressed on it though. Damn.

I think Remeron or Serzone are both prescribed for sexual dysfunction for the same reason...they block the receptors that are guilty.

But I've never heard of 7mgs. Are you sure it wasn't Remeron being referred to, instead of Serzone?

With Serzone, I've read reports of taking doses of 100mg to 200mg a couple hours before sex on an as-needed basis. But 7mgs? I doubt that's enough to do anything at all.

Due to certain liver enzyme reactions, Prozac+Serzone can cause anxiety and headaches and who knows what else. They really don't mix very well. Zoloft+Serzone is more common and a better mix. I would think low doses of Serzone, as needed (not daily), might be OK with Prozac, but there's only one way to find out, right? I am interested to see how it goes. Let us know.

JohnL,

Yeah, I'm sure it was a *really* low dose of
serzone with prozac. I read about it in that
new "Surviving Your Anti-Depressants", he kept
the dose low b/c of just the things you were
talking about. I'll talk to my p-doc about it
today, see what she thinks. It worries me a little
because, like you, I got MORE depressed on serzone
when I took it, but that was at a regular dose.
Man, what is it with Serzone and sex...it not only
dosen't interfere with normal sexuality but seems
to even improve it. Damn, I wish the stuff worked
for me...Wellbutrin too...I just don't seem to do
well on anything but SSRI's. Haven't tried Remeron
yet, scared about the weight gain thing.

Ruth and JohnL, I miss the Serzone a lot! It did add something to sex, and decreased my social anxiety. With Effexor-XR, I'm not depressed and my OCD is at bay, but I miss the Serzone. I take 40 mg/night (Effexor-XR makes it hard to sleep); sex just isn't the same, though! Hope they come up with an effective analog to Serzone for OCD which retains Serzone's nice qualities!

Prozac, Serzone, Amitriptyline cocktails

I've been on a couple of different med cocktails during the last year, all of which had dosage levels that were continually being adjusted. The following three are the biggies:

1.Amitriptyline, Adderall, Prozac and Wellbutrin.
2.Amitriptyline, Adderall, Wellbutrin.
3.Amitriptyline, Adderall, Serzone.

Now, I'm in the process of changing p-docs and the new one is reading the doctor notes of the old one. One item of interest is that my old p-doc was going to proceed to add Prozac back into the current med equation, Ami-Adderall-Serzone & Prozac.

As it stands, I'm feeling less depressed, no migraines, and I'm sleeping quite well. I'm still experiencing panic-attacks, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, disorganized, and not getting stuff done. That is a description of what Prozac can do for me, *if* I have the depression under control.

I'm a little anxious to add Prozac to the mix, how am I going to tell which is doing what, how, why, and when? Nefazodone (Serzone) is non-linear and drug-to-drug interactions are definitively possible and hard to avoid. Amitriptyline's (Elavil) blood levels are increased by all the rest (Proz, Add, Serz). When should I worry about Serotonin Syndrome and the like? And at what dose and which med?

Anyone want to give me a clue :-)
