Hello, moses. I have tried adrafinil. It has no mood boosting action, but it does keep you alert
without 'revving you up'. If you had to stay awake all night to drive from point A to point B, you might consider taking it. But no mood-enhancing properties per se.
Didn't hurt mood, either. It is like very strong coffee, only much more subtle.Bruce

I've tried Adrafinil and liked it overall. I found some interesting information on it that basically says it has antidepressant properties far superior to Prozac or tricyclics. It is prescribed in some parts of Europe as an antidepressant, especially in the elderly for its mind-sharpening characterisitcs and renewed interest in activities and hobbies. It also said that the antidepressant effects become most apparent after 3 weeks of use. It works basically by stimulating the NE alpha1 receptors.
Unfortunately I discovered a side effect I didn't appreciate. As with an strong NE drug, it causes constriction. This was most bothersome because my 'vital parts' became pathetically shriveled up, and it made erection difficult to achieve.
I got a wonderful kick and a great mood from it on my first day, which then seemed to fade over the next few days. I was prepared to give it a few weeks, but had to stop early due to the impotence side effects. It made my mind very sharp too. I could breeze right through a tough crossword puzzle that would have normally been challenging. Wish I could have continued. Those damn pesky sexual side effects.

John,
Those sexual side effects you described sound a lot like those experienced often by men on reboxetine. Both adrafinil and reboxetine stimulate the apha- adrenergic recpetors causing restriction of the urigenital tract making it difficult for some to urinate or achieve an erection. There is a drug called Flomax that is used mainly to assist with urination for those with enlarged prostates. It is a alpha-adrenergic blocker and therefore is effective in eliminating these side effects without diminishing the mood enhancement.

There are several places to get it. The often mentioned IAS (International Antiaging Systems) company accepts credit cards. No prescription. If you do a search on nootropics you may find other outfits as well.

I wanted to mention that prescriptions aren't usually needed because Adrafinil is a mild and generally non-abusable drug. The package insert is in French, but with the help of a free online translation source I was able to make out most of it. It is classified as a psychostimulant. And it is classified as a non-dependence non-abusable drug. I found Ritalin very good for mood, yet highly abusable. Adrafinil was equally as good for mood--maybe even better--but had no abuse potential at all for me. It didn't give that craving to do more and get high. And it doesn't seem to wear off in a way that leaves me craving another dose. I really liked it. If I could just get past the shriveled up vital parts syndrome, I'd be real happy with it.
Here's some info I found:
ADRAFINIL (Olmifon)
Rapidly restores vigilance and alertness in older people and the physically and mentally tired. Has a powerful
antidepressant action far superior to that of fluoxetine (Prozac) and clomipramine (Anafranil) and is without any serious
side effects. Adrafinil restores your powers of concentration, memory and intellectual function. When administered to
older people who have lost interest in life, adrafinil makes them want to take part in life again and they find that they
have renewed energy and vigor. Adrafinil may be correctly described as an anti-aging drug because it directly combats
degeneration in the part of the brain that allows you to take pleasure in life. Elderly people very often have disturbed
sleep patterns and take many naps during the day. Adrafinil restores a youthful sleep/wake cycle of full alertness in the
daytime and deep restorative sleep at night. After several weeks of treatment with Adrafinil daytime sleepiness
disappears, interest in intellectual activity is restored and depression lifts. It is very important to note that this improved
quality of alertness is NOT accompanied with mental excitation and insomnia as occurs with amphetamine or caffeine.
The correct dosage is 300 to 600 mg per day. The dosage can be adjusted according to response. Remember it takes
three weeks for all the effects of Adrafinil to become apparent. Do not use Adrafinil if you have any type of kidney or liver
problem or if you suffer from epilepsy.
ADRAFINIL: What is; (a.k.a. Olmifon) (Description & information below)
NOTE:not to be confused with "Anafranil (a.k.a. clomipramine)" the Antidepressant.Adrafinil provides alertness in most without the feeling often felt with stimulants that usually are prescribed for a person with
narcolepsy. Such as amphetamines etc. Also the possibility of tolerance is low with its continued use. There is however a
need for certain Liver function tests
on a regular basis with its continued use. Normally the same types of required testing as with the medication " cylert " which is
commonly prescribed in the USA. It is also used in certain parts europe as a "antidepressant". It is the combination of
Adrafinil's releasing stimulantive arousal effect(s), and its antidepressant effects that some doctors in europe recommend
Adrafinil over its newer form of Modafinil. There have been studies done in the United States "measuring depression in
individuals with sleep disorders",. In one study it was suggested that the
"rate of narcolepsy and depression is estimated to be between 30-52%".
This is the end of the thread.
