Naltrexone information needed

Posted by Teresa B. on March 10, 2000, at 9:18:31

I recently added 25 mg of naltrexone to 225 mg of effexor. How long does it take to work and what are the early side effects? Any other information would also be helpful.

I take 50mg of Naltrexone in addition to my regular antidepressants. I found that I noticed a difference after less than a week. It's not the be all to end all but it did improve my moods and cut my cravings for alcohol.

Also you can go to the "tips" section on the home page here and do a search on Naltrexone there.

Good Luck with it.

Chris

Naltrexone will work anywhere from a week to five, if it's going to work. One physician that utilizes it a lot claims excellent results 10% of the time, and marked results a good 75% of the times. Sadly I fall in the other 25% group.

When I started, Naltrexone was nasty. Nausea, aching muscles, general malaise. Overall ill feeling. I took the advice of WayneR--a Naltrexone success story--and broke the pill into tiny chunks to start with. After a week I was able to work up to the 25mg, and later to 50mg. I did feel some temporary results at about week 3. Improved social comfort, relaxed, confident, overall general well being. But even though Naltrexone usually prevents poop-out, it pooped out!

Just so you know, after the first week there were no side effects whatsoever. I hope it works for you. There's no guarantee, but the odds are in your favor. If you have any problems at first, just take little chunks of the pill until your body builds tolerance to the side effects. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you. JohnL
