My husband is going through a washout period right now (from Effexor, Risperdal & Xanax). He is starting Nardil March 14th. He is still taking Xanax during the washout, but it's still been really hard on him. He went through withdrawals from the Effexor & Risperdal this week--shaking uncontrollably & sweating. His doctor had him taper off & then quit.
We are confused about the dietary restrictions. Does no cheese mean NO cheese ever? All the sites I've found say the same thing, so I'd be interested in hearing personal experiences. I realize everyone may react differently, but how do you go about finding out what, if anything, you personally can tolerate?
Do you take anything in addition to Nardil, such as Xanax?
Thanks
Veronica

Suggest you try to get your hands on some recent articles on MAOI-food interactions. It turns out that mozzarella cheese is probably okay, e.g. The ceeses to be super-careful of include Stilton and bleu.
Tyramine reactions are dose-related; a lot of tyramine is worse than a little. Because you can't predict for sure what the effective dose (in raising BP) is for a particular person (it may even be different at different times for the same person), it's best to err on the side of caution. At the same time, many of the foods that have been listed as contraindicated are quite safe; due to hysteria over food-drug reactions, a lot of factually dubious claims have been made, passed on, and quoted as though they were facts rather than rumors. Today, some researchers are trying to undo the damage, but it's tough.
I don't take Nardil, but I take Parnate, another MAOI. I use Xanax occasionally. I think Nardil and Xanax sounds like a wonderful combination for anxiety, and I wish your husband the best.

Veronica - I've taken Nardil for many years and it's perfectly okay to eat American cheese, which is not an aged cheese.
I've also taken Xanax, but found that Nardil helped my anxiety so much that I didn't even think about needing Xanax after a few weeks on Nardil.
Best wishes to you and your husband. Nardil usually works very quickly and he should be feeling better soon.
