My new med and psy's funeral

Posted by Sef on March 5, 2000, at 21:44:44

Thank you all for your concern, it is great to know that people care.

I went to my pdoc appt feb 29th and my pdoc would not give me Revia (Naltrexone) he gave me neurontin 100mg 3XD instead. Despite the info I brought him from this web site he said he could find no literature on Revia and he believes I am having mood swings so neurontin would work better.

My Psychologist was cremated so there was no funeral, but there was a memorial service for him last Friday. I wanted to go...but freaked out at the thought of being around so many people, so I called the florist and sent a funeral basket instead.

I have been taking Neurontin since the 29th of Feb and for the past 3 days I have been very hungry. Does anyone know if Neurontin increases appetite????????
I hope it doesn't because I have been also fighting bulimia. I finally got it under control for the past year and I really don't want to fall back into it.

I don't feel comfortable around my pdoc, I get very nervous and flustered when I have to talk to him.

My insurance does not cover the other psychologist they have so they can't offer me the therapy.

Does anyone know if an M.D. can prescribe Naltrexone??? If they can, I'm thinking about just going to my M.D. for my meds since I don't like the pdoc. My M.D. has prescribed my prozac in the past.

I feel very lost without my Psychologist. God I miss him.

Sef,

Glad you are back here again but I am sorry to hear about problems with the new pdoc.

I was on Neurontin for a little while but never found much effect for myself. You are on a very low dose. I remember seeing others who were taking 2000-3000 mg/day which is considered within theraputic levels.

Any doctor can prescribe Naltrexone. Maybe if you went to your GP and showed him the info you have about it, then he would let you give it a try. I know that I'm doing Ok with it at 50mg/day (one dose at night).

Do you have any kind of psych center in your area that may be able to refer you to another pdoc? I know it's frustrating with the insurance limitations.

Hoping for the best for you,
Chris

Hi not to scare you or anything butI was on Neurontin for 5 months and gained 50 pounds. So I was taken off of the Neurontin and put on Topomax and now I have nowhere near the control that I had with the neurontin. I wish I had never gone off the neurontin. I would gladly take the extra weight. Watch out for edema/.

Hi, Sef.

That was really nice of you to send a basket. Don't sweat not being at the memorial service--you were doing the right thing to anticipate how uncomfortable you would feel in a large group of people.

Did you also start working with your new psychologist for therapy? How is that going?

Hang in there.

Hi Sef,

Sorry to hear he died. I'm glad to hear you're okay.

From my experiences, most M.D.s don't feel very comfortable with psychiatrict drugs - especially if you want to try things like Naltrexone, and when you are not certain which disorder you have. But ask your doctor, maybe he/she would feel comfortable.

I had eating disorders for so long (from about the age of 12-26) - both anorexia and binge eating. Once I discovered and then treated my underlying disorders, my eating disorders just dissapated into thin air. As far as I can tell, bulimia is often a coping mechanism for living with another more powerful disorder, such as ADD-H, Borderline personality disorder, or manic depression. You sound like you're on the right track Sef.

Can't help you with the Neurotin. Janice

Thanks to all for your advice and support. I think you know how much I appreciate it.

I think I will try asking my M.D. for the Naltrexone. Cynthia...the fact you gained 50 lbs on Neurontin was, yes, frightening to say the least.

Janice, I agree with you about M.D.s being leary of prescribing psy drugs, mine seems aprehensive and always asks what my psychologist recommended.

Noa, my insurance does not cover the other psychologist so I will have to find a new place to go I guess. Maybe I will try to go it alone without therapy because I went to many psy docs with no results until I found my last one. He was the first person that actually helped me. Thanks for your kind words, I always look forward to reading your replies.

ChrisK, thanks for understanding.

sef- I didn't mean to scare you away from neurontin but the hardest thing for me has been finding one that works (neurontin) and then having to get off of it for physical reasons. the fact that you have already noticed an increase in appetite is a red flag. It also wasn't just the eating but massive swelling. It has been a hard thing for me to get off of the neurontin. Now I am taking Topomax which has a weight loss property and for the first time I am having a dramatically decreased appetite and it is hopefully going to help with getting my moods even. I am also taking tegretol. I hope the best for you. I hope you are able to find a doc that can work with you on this and help you sort things out. I often feel that there are far worse things than being fat.-Cynthia
