Personality Inventory testing

Posted by Thomas W on March 2, 2000, at 21:05:43

Hi All,

I wanted to know if anyone here has taken the Minneapolis
multij-phasic personality inventory test? I just did and
got the results back today. My counselor told me that it
revealed a high score of depression, and anger/resentment. Also
strong tendencies toward low self confidence and a negative
feeling about myself and life in general. Not a very good
booster of ones confidence. He then told me not to take
it literally that experience still counts. I don't know
what to make of this. Should I pay much attention to it or not?
Have any of you taken it and what did you think about it. I am to
see a psychiatrist next week for the first time. I asked
for your help on this and received some excellent information.
I feel worse now having been faced with this. thx for your help.

James here....

Yes I have taken the MMPI. It helped make some personality issues clear to me.

Thomas, you took this test because you thought there was a problem and guess what...there is ! Welcome to the club. Lots of people get depressed
and this tends to bring on feelings of worthlessness. Be glad you did not score high on some od the other indices...the ones that would indicate you are parionoid and thus indicae a more serious mental illness. You have depression which is the most treatable illness...lots of people have it and do well. I have been a happy camper 360 days a year since i went on AD's in 1985.

The MMPI is not a test you pass or fail...it is just a snapshot of how you feel now....if you take the MMPI after you have gotten some treatment I'm sure you will be happy with the results.

Now that you have the MMPI results I think the most important question is "what are you going to do now about it ? Focus on that and put the test behind you.

Hi Thomas,
I took the MMPIA2 (same test). I think the results aren't as important as what you/your support do with them. My therapist (with whom I have a good relationship) used the results to help see issues we need to work on. My pdoc (with whom I have never "clicked") used the results to assault me with various labels. Now I'm working with my therapist on the problem I've acquired of looking at my behavior in the context of those labels. As my therapist said, "You're still the same person you were before you took the test."

I am glad I had a working relationship with my therapist before I took the test. That way he took the results in the context of what he already knew about me, instead of forming opinions based solely on the test. I will get to see how it works the other way around (which is more like what you're faced with) since I'm in the midst of changing pdocs. The new pdoc will likely see the test results before he sees me.

I picked up a book today on Barnes & Noble's sales rack, "They Say You're Crazy: How the World's Most Powerful Psychiatrists Decide Who's Normal," by Paula J. Caplan, Ph.D. Obviously I haven't read it yet--one of the more intriguing chapters is titled "Do Mental Health Professionals Think Anyone Is Normal?"

The initial "shock" of being labeled has worn off somewhat (after all, it's not tatooed on my forehead). All in all I'd say that the test was helpful.

There are employers who make employment candidates take the MMPI as part of their application process. What a contrast to the kind of trust you are talking about, Kim.
