drugs for obsessive thoughts for bi-polar

Posted by Amanda S on February 25, 2000, at 19:30:39

The lamictal is working very well, but can't get rid of the thoughts on dying. In a womens bi-polar group and this seems to be commonplace. Sometimes I picture myself in an awful car crash and or my children. When I have a free moment all I think about is death. Talked to my pdoc, but she says I need to distract myself. I want something that will numb that part of my brain. HELP

I agree with your doc... distraction is a very powerful thing.

Amanda,

I also had obsessive thoughts about death and suicide. What got me over that hump was Zyprexa. It's an anti-psychotic but has some AD effects. I know there are others on this board taking it. Doses range from 2.5 mg to 15 mg. It may be worth looking into.

Chris

Amanda - I agree with Chris (and also Sane) that a bit of Zyprexa may help. Ask your doc about a trial. Start at 2.5 mg and increase it every three to four days, if needed. It is well worth a shot. Keep in mind, Zyprexa can cause weight gain (esp in the underweight), so you may have to watch your diet and exercise to counteract this annoying side-effect. Good luck - Cam W.

Hi. Haven't seen you post here before. If you are new, welcome! If you have been "lurking", well, welcome, too. If you are a "regular" who has changed your name for this post, I am curious as to why.

BTW, are you the same as "finally sane" who recently posted elswhere on this board ?
