Hello.
I've started a trial course of 75mg/day Effexor XR and was wondering what the FDA actually approve Effexor for? I suffer from a few bad things and was wondering if it will help with Social Phobia? Mood swings? Moments of anger?
Its the 2nd day and already I've noticed I cannot enjoy a cigarette. Which is excellent- I'd love to quit tobacco and it's also ceased my need for marijuana.
However, I have been very ill since the first tablet; vomiting and constant sick feeling and no energy. I understand this will pass in time but tomorrow I might half my dose :-/
Tia.

Dave, I'm taking Effexor-X at 225 mg/day (started at 37.5 mg/day, then gradually increased) for obsessive-compulsive disorder and depression. It's really helped keep my mind clearer, has elevated my mood a bit, and has helped somewhat with the obsessions and compulsions. It doesn't decrease my social anxiety however. I always make sure I eat something when I take it (after learning the hard way with Serzone in the past...I got nauseous taking it on an empty stomach).--Cindy W

I agree that starting at 37.5 is a good idea.

> Effexor XR is indicated for refractory depression up here in Canada. It works similar to the SSRI antidepressants like Prozac and Paxil, but the manufacturer says it also works on another neurotransmitter called norepinephrine as well as on serotonin. This should theoretically make Effexor similar in activity to the tricyclic (TCA) antidepressants. But neurotransmitter binding studies have shown that Effexor does not bind to the norepinephrine reuptake receptor that strongly, so you could consider this antidepressant to be similar to the SSRIs in action.> This being said, the SSRI Paxil has be shown to be of some use in Social Phobia, so maybe Effexor could have a similar effect. It is worth giving it a two or three month trial to see if it helps. You will need to stay on Paxil at least that long to see if it will work for social phobia.
>With regard to the side effects of Effexor. They will be fairly bad for about the first two to three weeks, until your body adjusts to the drug. I recommend that you tough it out for the three weeks and see if the side effects lessen. If they don't, you may have to switch, but if they do you may be able to live a more productive life with your social phbia under control. Give it a shot and good luck. - Cam W. > DaveHi Dave,
I've been on Effexor XR for 6 mos for anxiety. Panic attacks brought me to the doctor's office and doc prescribed the Effexor. It has helped me tremendously by allowing me to focus. It has elevated my mood by giving me a sense that I am in control of my life and I rarely loose my temper (a big problem for me since early teen-hood). It has helped me control my social anxiety and I'm almost to the point where being with people is enjoyable. I can talk to people without my heart speeding up and I don't feel as self-consious. In the beginning I also felt nauseated to the point where I wasn't eating. That only lasted a few weeks and my appetite is back to normal. I feel wonderful--almost normal. Stick with it and give it a fair chance.

Hi. Well that was 2 days ago and I wanted to fill you in on what has happened since. After I wrote that, I was in a terrible state. I came down with that weird flu-like feeling but I know it wasn't viral. It was from the 75mg. It pretty much got worse all night and I couldnt stop vomiting. No sleep, etc. Anyway, second day, bit better. I wish I could cut down the dose though. I feel way too "high". Since all I have is capsules it's hard to separate these into smaller doses, so next prescription I might possibly ask for smaller dosage if it's available?
I feel a little better today and there's been no vomiting but still I havent eaten except for fluids and still feel sick every now and then. However, it's quite scary how quickly I have adjusted to this. I'm starting to feel a lot more positive now, but I'd just like to lose the sick feeling and be able to eat something! :) Any suggestions?
btw; thanks for replies, they were very uplifting.
kind regards

Have you told your pdoc how awful you have been feeling?
And, yes, it comes in 37.5 mg capsules.
This is the end of the thread.
