After taking Carbatrol for approx 4-6 months I feel at times out of control with my mood swings. I feel like it is doing no good at all and would like to stop taking it. Would it be harmful to stop taking it suddenly or should I do it slowly? One DR. has dignosed me with Bi-Polar Disorder. Is that enough or should I get a second opinion? I was on Prozac before all this and it seemed to work much better for me.

You may want to get a second opinion; it can't hurt. You may be bipolar II and perhaps you experienced the hypomanic elements as pleasurable and not problematic, but then the Prozac could be adding fuel to the fire i.e. it could cause you to cycle rapidly or precipitate a manic episode. What other drugs did you take? I never thought of it asa first-line drug. I'm pretty sure the standard is something like
lithium or depakote
depakote + lithium or depakote + carbatrol
lithium + depakote + carbatrol
