Ugh! Gotta do something Dratted Difficult!

Posted by Racer on March 2, 2005, at 15:01:30

OK, y'all remember the Agency from Hell? And Dr EyeCandy? And The Therapist From The Black Lagoon? ("Swamp Thing" to her friends, no doubt...)

I'm working on drafting the complaints to their licensing boards, and it's so drattedly hard! It's bringing up a lot of fierce stresses for me, but they're no longer the whole "I must be *wrong*" stuff. Now it's the whole "I'm right, but who's going to believe a psychiatric patient versus a mental health practitioner?"

That's an improvement, of course.

I'm reminding myself of Facts, such as the FACT that I went from about 145# to about 95# and it didn't show up on anyone's radar there. That is a Fact. It cannot really be disputed -- even if someone says that I don't have proof that I went to a specific weight, there is proof of what I weighed in the hospital just before he started treating me, and there is proof from the doctors I saw last autumn of what I weighed then. Maybe it doesn't show my lowest weight, but it does still show that I lost roughly a third of my weight, and there is no mention of any weight related issue in my chart. And, of course, I'm getting treated now for Anorexia Nervosa, which one wouldn't expect to "catch" overnight.

Still, I find myself getting bogged down by the whole, "How can I write this so that someone reading it will not automatically thing I'm just nuts? How can I present these facts so that someone reading them will see it as worth investigating?"

And it's sucking me dry...

That's an update on me. How's everyone else?

Hi Racer,
If you want any help with it, let me know. I'm trained in writing & editing. I could look over it with a fresh eye, coming from the perspective of not having lived through it myself and not knowing a lot of details. If you wanted to keep certain details anonymous still, it's easy to do before sending it to me.
You can email me on rachbabble at hotmail.com if you're interested.
Rach

Getting someone else to read it over, who isn't involved, is a really good idea..

But remember that few people will just ignore it and label you "nuts" because of it.. If its worded well, and not "whiney".. try to stress that yo are not complaining for your own benefit, but because you want to prevent this happening to anyone else is always a good tactic to stop people thinking you're after some money.

Good luck - you have REAL grounds for a complaint.

Nikki xx

I agree with Rach and Nik. Complaints against shrinks and shrinky orgs are tricky because of the balance of power in the relationship. We being the sickos and they being of sound mind and body (yeah...).

However, you have resources to draw on here (at PB). You've written about some of the problems, and I think a search for your posts would be a great idea, and help you be very specific about dates/what happened/what you did/what they did, etc. Almost like a journal, and ... do you have a journal?

Also, do you have some sort of advocate or advisor who is familiar with the 'system' there? That could help a lot. I would think there would be orgs that could help.

Best of luck,
xoxo
Shar
