Heheheh, finally had a breakthrough with that Access project of mine! Of course, it came on a really hard day for me, so it was HOURS later that I realized it was a breakthrough. lol (OK, more of a pained chuckle, but still -- should we make "col" mean "chuckle out loud?")
I think I can make my form now. The reports shouldn't be this hard, I hope. (Please -- don't tell me that they're easier or harder -- let me go on in blissful, willful ignorance so that I can just pretend that the reports will do themselves.) (Oh, and let's pretend that some little brownie will come in in the night and do all the data entry, too. After all, while we're dreaming, may as well aim high, right?)
If you want to take a little trip in that kewl plane of yours, though, I do have a couple of questions about better ways of doing parts of it. I could give you some cocoa -- don't think I have any tea other than flavored herbal -- and some nice Vegemite on delish' sourdough bread? Of course, I think it's best if you don't answer my questions until AFTER I finish my form -- I don't want to get too scared off by the answers!
Howzitgoin', Resident SuperHeroine?

{{{sigh}}}
Well, who knows whether or not my little project would work -- damn thing keeps telling me it [imagine a Lily Tomlin voice here] "doesn't have enough memory to update display" what? You've got 45MB of RAM and .98GB of free disk space to use for the swap file -- what the heck is your problem???
{sigh}
It was good while it lasted, though, and the form I did manage to make was working. Now to whinge about the memory for a while...

Nikki, can you help me with this before I throw a brick through my monitor? We can do it through email if you'd like -- you can email me at babbler39 at excite dot com if you're willing to answer a couple of questions about how to implement this monstrosity?
Part of the problem, by the way, is that I've got a couple of books -- all for a different version of Access, and all focussed on different things: one is a basic "teach yourself to use the program by following examples" book that I picked up to see if there was a point to trying an Access class at the Center. It's great for the "how to use the program" for end users sorts of things, for that version of the program. It's also got a lot of good stuff that might have been helpful for a basic class, but not for anything about how to set up something outside the sorts of questions the book figured would be asked in a small business.
The other is O'Reilly -- the one by Steve Roman? It's great -- if you can distill what he means from what he says. (And yes -- I do find myself annoyed with myself, since that's a Racer characteristic, too...) I think what I need is actually in there -- but cutting through the chaff to find the grain is just impossible for me right now. Not enough brain to hold the meaning through the explanation, you know?
The other problem is that neither of them addresses my primary interest at this stage: data entry forms. I'm just trying to create a data entry form that will update the tables involved so that I can enter everything in one place, and the only way I've found so far is to use a form with a dozen subforms on it. That's such a pain in the you-know-where -- I just want to hit "TAB" over and over, not have to think about when it's "TAB" and when it's "ctrl-TAB", you know? The reports, I think, won't be so hard for me. The form, though, is.
If you think you can spare a few minutes to answer a couple of questions or make a few suggestions, please let me know.
(Oh, and I'm going to do something that might help in the meantime: install HELP... My husband keeps insisting that everything I could possibly need is online, so use the development site at Microsoft. Um... Maybe that's working for him, with Visual C++. but it hasn't helped me so far, and maybe what I'm looking for is right there in the Help files?
Anyway, thanks -- if nothing else, I figure if you can do it, it's not impossible, right? That might mean you give me hope. :^D

You have? Good.. now, Don't panic! *laughing*
hey, I met Prince Charles today.. but I shall post that msg in a min!!
You should be able to set your tab order and that will also tell the form to use tab to get to that field..
Annoyingly, I have no idea off the top of my head which menu option will do this!!I'll go have a look!
Unless I've misunderstood what you meant!

LOL! And my husband came up with a good one today, too:
"You know, it might be better to go out and buy MS Visual Basic and learn to use it so that you can build this thing..."
Thanks, Honey...
OK, first, the problem with the tab is fixed -- but now that's I've entered a few days worth of this stuff, another problem has come up! For some reason, it isn't updating certain linked fields. I'm thinking that I've either got to add the primary keys from those tables into the linking table, or add the fields from those tables into the query that one of my subforms is based on? Can you help with that?
The relationships from the linking table are all set at one-to-many, based on a compound primary key in the linking table, since it's really many-to-many-to-many > TOO MANY! Sorry, got a little hot there... It's three tables set to the linking table, at any rate. They're all set to "cascade update" and everything worked EXCEPT that the date and time were only created in the linking table, not any of the child tables?
I know what the real problem is, by the way, so don't tell me to learn to do it properly or I'll have to stick my tongue out at you. I know how to use the program a little, and I know a little about relational databases, but I don't know how to *program* a relational database in Access, 'K? I already *know* that. {sulk}
OK, back now! {bright smile} If you can offer any better advice than my husband did -- other than crayons -- I'd love to hear it.
And your job sounds pretty awesome, although not the taking minutes part. (Then again, I can't write very well by hand, and do it very slowly. It's much worse now than when I was in school, but even then my notes were the last you'd want to borrow. I'd go home each night and transcribe them while I could still remember the class well enough that I could decipher them...) And Prince Charles? Eldest son of one of the sexiest men I ever saw? Too COOL! You gonna tell us what he was there for, or is it a secret? Congrats!

Nikki, I was feeling *so* clever! I fixed the problem, everything was working! Then I got clever: "Ooooh, let's make some of these combo boxes, instead!" Broke it and can't remember what I did to fix it...
{sigh}
But, I'm still a bit chuffed from my success...
Still, I will have to do data entry when the form is done, then make the reports...
Oh, well...
Thanks, though, because your answers here have given me a lot more confidence in trying this -- and you know how a success in one area can make you feel good enough to try something else in another area, right? That part is helping me feel a good deal better, too.
This is the end of the thread.
