Comfortable? Numb?

Posted by shar on January 26, 2004, at 20:47:36

This is from Pink Floyd "The Wall" album (probably my favorite of all time). The verses alternate between the evil doc (who starts the song) and Big Pink, as Pink has had his breakdown but the managers want him to do the show anyway. I really love it, plus there haven't been posts here for a while and I don't want to lose 2000.

Comfortably Numb (Gilmour, Waters) 6:49

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.

There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Thanks, Shar.

I was just thinking about how quiet it's been here lately. And worrying about some of our 2000 folks like Phil and Greg.

thanks so much for posting that- I wasn't familiar with the lyrics- they're very haunting.
I'm worried about Greg and Phil also, hope they post.- judy

You know, sometimes when I'm on the beginning of the road to recovery from a despressive episode, I get a major craving for Pink Floyd. Funny, huh, that something so mundane seems to be shared. Maybe it's our ages, that we were aware of them when Dark Side Of The Moon stayed on the charts so long?

Anyway, I agree, something in their music does resonate in a special way.

The rest of the time, by the way, I can take them or leave them, and never play their records (yes, on vinyl -- god help me when the stylus wears out), or even think of them. Hmmm...

(And thanks for starting something...)
