I hope you had a great birthday. Have we discussed u-turns here yet? e.g. instead of being 52, technically you made a u-turn at 50 and are actually 48. welcome to my reality- judy

Hippo birdie, two ewes!
Hippo birdie, two ewes!
Hippo birdie, deer, ewe,
Hippo birdie, two ewes!By the way, Judyl has it only half right: what you do is, you hold your breath and count backwards on your birthday, and that makes you younger instead. Start now, you'll be 30 again in no time!
Happy birthday, Shar.

I know, for some of you 'oldtimer' isn't quite so literal.
I don't really mind so much being 52, it just seems like I shouldn't be yet.
Thanks!

Yeah, I know the feeling. Sometimes, I see someone in a public situation, and for some reason, I assume they are older than me--they look so grown up and in control-- and then I actually look at them and realize, no, I'm probably older than them, it's just that I'm so developmentally behind. In some ways, my body is very definitley my age, if not older, like fat and lumpy and heading toward diabetes, and a victim of gravity for sure, but in others, not, like no wrinkles and not much grey hair. Combine this with not having kids, people usually assume I'm about 5 to 10 years younger than I am. But my creaky, arthritic bones remind me every day, especially in the morning, that I am indeed my age.
But inside--since I lost a few decades to this drat disease--I also have that feeling that I shouldn't be this age yet. I don't really know WHAT age I feel though. Do you?

Noa,
I do not know how old I feel. I used to feel like I was still 20 (a couple years ago), but as my finances and self-confidence crumbled, that disappeared rather quickly. I think that has a lot to do with my depression getting worse and not having a job (that latter one is especially true now). Right now, I just have super flat affect and feel tired and completely unmotivated. I have a job interview Jan. 7, and I know when I drag my depressed butt in there I'm going to be compared to perky 25+ year olds. Just peachy.Ewwww, what a crappy post! Guess I'd like to wait a bit before seeing how old I feel--surely it can't really be 80!

Belated best wishes on the 23rd anniversary of your 29th birthday!!!
I usually feel like I'm about 24 (mentally, developmentally), although after visiting my best friend and her husband last night and reminiscing about all of the years we've known each other, I feel older than my 42. And then I look at my dad (a 60s-looking and 36-acting 77, who, by the way, has a 4 year old kid now) and the trouble he and I had together yesterday lifting an object that years ago probably wouldn't have meant much, and I feel older than the diatoms.
I think age is generally all in our heads, and sometimes our bodies — if we let it go there.

ah the perks of hypomania during job interviews- I've always gotten the job. barring that, is there anything you can do to counter your flat affect on 1/7? a double expresso from starbucks? a new outfit and trip to the hairdresser so you know you look good? even in my worst depressions, there are tricks I've used to be 'perky' for half an hour or so (then crawled back into bed), do you have anything that works well for you? here's wishing you a new year filled with good health and financial security- judy

How'd the interview go?
Don't be so sure that the younger applicants will be preferred. A relative of mine is getting back in the job market now that her kids are getting bigger, and she was very concerned about anyone wanting to hire an almost-fifty-year-old-lawyer who hasn't worked in a firm in a looooooooong time. But she has been getting a lot of encouragement from hearing that employers are not necessarily dismissing the older applicants anymore, that there are employers out there who are looking for more 'seasoned' people.
Good luck.
